I am always seeking new outdoors places to shoot so this week's assignment was spot on for me. Some social commitments both days this weekend are keeping me close to home so this morning I headed out for Milford, NH in search of new waterfalls. I've been to Milford many times and we have friends who live on the east side of Milford but that's really West Nashua to me. I had not been into Milford center or west of there since.....well, for a very long time. The half mile walk to the Lower Falls was easy and I got set up about 7:30 while the falls were still in shade, though gradually the sharp sunlight came creeping down into the valley to the falls. I had the falls to myself for an hour, timing my departure perfectly as 5 minutes after I left another photographer was walking in.

Rising for the Moon

I won't bore you with the menagerie of thoughts that go running through a man's head during the wee hours of the night after only 3 1/2 hours of sleep while on an empty beach watching the crescent moon rising out of the sea but the random song generator in my head let loose with Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention sailing away with the song after which I've named this image. I always thought that the hour just before dawn is the best hour of the night but when you're out with yourself at a time where you're nearly as far away from the sunrise as you are from last night's sunset then you're feeling a bit dream-like in your head and wishing that the feeling will hang on just a bit longer.

Blue Morning

After a couple hours of dark sky shots, I walked over to Odiorne Point to enjoy the quiet beginnings of the day from the grounds of the state park. I had the blue hour and the sunrise all to myself. Stay tuned for a sunrise shot or two from this morning.

EXPLORED MAY 5, 2013

The rising moon and the soon-to-be-rising sun highlighted this house at the edge of the ocean. I had Pebble Beach in Rockport all to myself at 3:30AM yesterday. I was there mainly to scout some (hopefully) semi-dark sky locations for Milky Way shots. The light pollution along the populated New England coast is difficult to escape but this is a decent location. I was rewarded by some clear dark skies though I should have arrived at least an hour earlier to avoid the moon. A 1:30 wake up was early enough. But I was intrigued enough with the night possibilities that I did it again this morning.

Just Like Any Other Day

The fast dissolving sunrise that startled me as I was concentrating on taking photos of Portland Head Light. I was in a fairly precarious spot and had to take care to not lose my balance as I scrambled to re-set my gear for shooting the sun and not the lighthouse. I was able to snap off four nice frames of this sunrise before the sun disappeared up into the overcast. This was the final frame and within a minute the disc had completely vanished.

The final blush of sunrise color disappears into the overcast. The morning was about as gray as it could get except for a small sliver of color at the horizon for about 20 minutes. However it was still a rewarding first trip for me to the famous lighthouse.

At the summit of Mt Adams with Mike Boyko. Mike and I enjoyed a clear but very windy day climbing up Mt Adams via Lowe's Path. The scenery was breathtaking and there was so much snow that we snowshoed all the way to the summit. The windswept northwest slope is usually a struggle in crampons over the snow-covered rocks. Here, just onto the leeward side of the summit, we enjoyed a brief respite from the wind while we looked down on Mt Madison.
