Gethsemane (lit."oil press") is a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem most famous as the place where, according to the gospels, Jesus and his disciples are said to have prayed the night before he was arrested, the day before his death. A study conducted by the National Research Council of Italy in 2012 found that several olive trees in the garden are amongst the oldest known to science. Dates of 1092, 1166 and 1198 CE were obtained by carbon dating older parts of the trunks of three trees. DNA tests show that the trees were originally planted from the same parent plant.

This is scanned from deep in the archives. Taken on a trip in 2000, in extreme heat and humidity!
HDR

Picture this. The Roman Army is marching toward you, you are one of a group who, tired of religious dissention have moved away from Jerusalem your city, and have set up a community devoted to peace, scholarship and worship about forty kilometres away in the Judaen wilderness. As priests you have no army: you live a monastic life in the desert, here you have adopted strict dietary laws and are committed to celibacy.

You live in the small community at Qumran, near the Dead Sea. and your manuscripts describe the beliefs of your sect and events of your time.

But time now is of the essence, what do you save? In a desperate gesture you take that which is most precious to you, these manuscripts some containing the Book of Isaiah, stuff them into a jar and in desperate haste, hide them in a cave in the wilderness which surrounds you; and face the merciless might of Rome.

Here, in this forbidding terrain, 400m below sea level, they remain for almost 1900 years, until 1946 when they are literally "fallen upon" by a Bedouin shepherd.

These manuscripts have now become known as the the Dead Sea Scrolls. And their discovery has caused a sensation in the world of biblical scholarship.

"The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of 972 texts discovered between 1946 and 1956 that consist of biblical manuscripts from what is now known as the Hebrew Bible and extra-biblical documents found on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea, from which they derive their name. They were specifically located at Khirbet Qumran in what was then British Mandate Palestine, and since 1947, what has been known as the West Bank.
The texts are of great historical and religious significance and include the earliest known surviving copies of biblical and extra-biblical documents, as well as preserving evidence of great diversity in late Second Temple Judaism. They are written in Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Nabataean, mostly on parchment.

The initial discovery, by Bedouin shepherd, took place between November 1946 and February 1947. The shepherd discovered 7 scrolls housed in jars in a cave (cave 4 pictured lower right) at what is now known as the Qumran site. John C. Trever reconstructed the story of the scrolls from several interviews with the Bedouin one of whom actually fell into one. He retrieved a handful of scrolls, which Trever identifies as the Isaiah Scroll, Habakkuk Commentary, and the Community Rule, and took them back to the camp to show to his family. None of the scrolls were destroyed in this process, despite popular rumor.

The Bedouin kept the scrolls hanging on a tent pole while they figured out what to do with them, periodically taking them out to show people. The Bedouin first took the scrolls to a dealer named Ibrahim 'Ijha in Bethlehem. 'Ijha returned them, saying they were worthless, after being warned that they might have been stolen from a synagogue. Undaunted, the Bedouin went to a nearby market, where a Syrian Christian offered to buy them. A sheikh joined their conversation and suggested they take the scrolls to Khalil Eskander Shahin, "Kando," a cobbler and part-time antiques dealer.

The Bedouin and the dealers returned to the site, leaving one scroll with Kando and selling three others to a dealer for GBP7 (US$29 in 2003). The original scrolls continued to change hands after the Bedouin left them in the possession of a third party until a sale could be arranged.
In 1947 the original seven scrolls caught the attention of Dr. John C. Trever, of the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR), who compared the script in the scrolls to that of The Nash Papyrus, the oldest biblical manuscript then known, and found similarities between them. In March, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War prompted the move of some of scrolls to Beirut, Lebanon, for safekeeping. On 11 April 1948, Miller Burrows, head of the ASOR, announced the discovery of the scrolls in a general press release.
Written on papyrus, these manuscripts have been dated to various ranges between 408 BCE and 318 CE. Bronze coins found on the site form a series beginning with Hyrcanus 1 (135-104 BCE) and continue without a gap until the first Jewish revolt (66–73 CE). The scrolls are traditionally identified with the ancient Jewish sect called the Essenes, though some recent interpretations have challenged this association".........latter section.drawn from Wikipedia.

This Early Christian church sits on a hill overlooking the archaeological site of the Eleusinian Mysteries at Eleusis about 30km west of Athens. Looking back and up from the stone steps it is unmistakably the old giving way to the new.

The Eleusinian Mysteries were initiation ceremonies held every year for the cult of Demeter and Persephone based at Eleusis in ancient Greece. Of all the mysteries celebrated in ancient times, these were held to be the ones of greatest importance. It is acknowledged that their basis was an old agrarian cult and it is believed that the cult of Demeter was established around 1500BC.

Many of the most illustrious of the ancients of Greece and Rome were initiates of these mysteries, including Roman Emperors Augustus, Claudius, Hadrian, and Marcus Aurelius. John the Baptist may well have taken the ritual of baptism from what he knew of these rites, which were widespread and well known during his time.
The rites of Eleusis were held for more than two thousand years: and for that two thousand years civilized humanity was sustained and ennobled by them . When Christianity conquered the Mediterranean world, the rites of Demeter, having perhaps fulfilled their mission to humanity, came to an end. The doctrine which inspired the world for so long was gradually forgotten, and its secrets were buried with its last hierophant. After all, this seems to be the eternal law: one source succeeds another, and a doctrine must die so that another can be born.
