Almost a Bridge too Far

Having photographed the 6L65 Sellafield-Carlisle Yard service in Cummersdale I thought my chance of getting another bite at the cherry was a bridge too far. Despite being unlucky with the sequence of traffic lights through Carlisle city, I arrived at the Etterby bridge, Kingmoor, just in time to make the necessary camera settings for depth of field and speed and was satisfied to capture 37259 yet again on this unusual working, near its home depot and the Carlisle Yard destination for the empty ballast wagons following weekend engineering work on the Cumbrian Coast Line. Thanks are due to the Carlisle PSB for regulating the service in the station area!

Just a few minutes before I heard the distinctive Stanier 'hooter', signifying its departure from Carlisle Citadel, I was observing an otter swimming upstream close to the river bank where I was standing, and I don't know who was more surprised! Just before 8.00am on Saturday 14th June 2013 Stanier 'Black 5' 45407, with its support coach, heads from Grosmont to Fort William, to take up its summer duties on the West Highland 'Jacobite' services.

A juxtaposition of old and new in many respects. 'K1' class 2-6-0 No.61994 'The Great Marquess' crosses Crown Street, Carlisle, with the empty stock for the return 'Fellsman' charter to Lancaster on Wednesday 12th June 2013, catching a mother and child by total surprise. Not a 'composite' image; exactly as it happened. Sometimes the risk pays off. The stone wall to the right of the advertising hoarding looks suspiuciously like it has incorporated some stone blocks from the ancient city walls.

Colas Railfreight 56302 heads the 6J37 Carlisle Yard to Chirk log train over the Eden river bridge, on the approach to Caldew Junction. The concrete bridge was construced by the LMS in 1942 to increase freight capacity north of Carlisle, the military ordnance depots in the region undoubtedly influencing the decision on the installation at the time. I am standing on the site of the former power station fireless locomotive steam charging shed, the coal sidings here at one time serving the now closed Willowholme Power Station adjacent to the south bank of the River Eden and fed by conveyor belt from the sidings. Noteworthy is the concrete 'refuge' in the foreground falling away from the main structure of the bridge due to erosion of the ground below.

Colas Railfreight 56302 winds its way along the freight lines, shortly after leaving Carlisle Yard, heading the 6J37 timber to Chirk on Saturday 1st June 2013. Signs of the steam age are still visible beneath the high arched bridge at Etterby where access/egress was gained with the former Scottish Region (Caledonian Railway) shed at Kingmoor, which was just to the right of this scene beyond the bridge. The DRS Kingmoor depot can be seen behind the log wagons.

The rotting tongue and groove wooden fencing panels and supporting rusting ironwork alongside the former taxi and Royal Mail access ramp to Carlisle Citadel station, complete with cobweb strand, and the neglected trackwork in the former coaching stock sidings, are in marked contrast to the immaculate presentation of John Cameron's 1930's-built Gresley A4 Pacific No.60009 'Union of South Africa'. Modern and traditional front locomotive headlamps are also a noteworthy comparison of age differences.

Colas Rail 56302 effortlessly powers the 6J37 Carlisle Yard to Chirk Kronospan loaded logs train through Carlisle Citadel station, passing Wapping Sidings, on Monday 27th May 2013.This 'Grid' was originally built at Crewe Works in 1983 as 56124 primarily for use on MGR coal traffic. The class 56 fleet was dealt a massive blow in 1998 with the introduction of new General Motors Class 66 locomotives, with a total of over half of the original fleet of 135 being stood down and stored at various locations around the country. Freight operator Jarvis Fastline returned 56124 to the mainline in the guise of 56302 following an overhaul, but due to a downturn in traffic Jarvis withdrew the loco in 2009 and it was subsequently stored in Roberts Road depot in Doncaster until 2010 when it was moved for further storage at Hitchin. 56302 was saved for preservation by Edward Stevenson and returned to mainline use, being hired to Colas Railfreight in late 2012 and painted in their striking orange, yellow & black colour scheme.
With cylinder drain cocks open and the exhaust filling Crown Street and Citadel station with smoke, Driver Gordon Hodgson opens the regulator and eases forward to Wapping Sidings to take on water and build up the fire in preparation for the journey ahead over the 'Midland Route' to Hellifield and on to Preston and Blackpool. The Victorian cast-iron structure of the Rome Street Gasworks provides a suitably period backdrop with the clouds in the western sky picking up the colour tones from the rising sun. The sky shimmers aginst the heat from the boiler of the 'Black 5' as its fire is built up and the tender is topped up for the journey ahead over the Midland Route and on to Preston and Blackpool.
The usual middle of the day arrival for charter trains into Carlisle never makes for easy photography on a sunny day. I chose a high viewpoint, from the location of the former Upperby motive power depot engineman's lodgings (now a hotel), looking across the roofline of the long-abandoned Upperby motive power and carriage shed (12B), now becoming engulfed in trees. The site of the former roundhouse is just out of view to the bottom right. With the sun virtually straight down the track, DB Schenker 90026 reaches its destination heading the 1Z63 'Lakelander' charter from London Euston on Saturday 1st June 2013.
