Among the Suri people in Ethiopia a girl's lower lip is cut when she reaches the age 15 or 16. The girl's lip is pierced by her mother or another woman of her village and a simple wooden plug is inserted. The cut is held open by the wooden plug until the wound heals. After that the plug is replaced by a bigger one. The stretching of the lip continues by inserting progressively larger plugs over a period of several months. At a diameter of about 4 cm the first lip plate made of clay can be inserted, the final diameter ranges from about 8 cm to over 20 cm.

Nowadays the girls in some Suri villages decide for themselves whether to wear a lip plate or not. However, wearing a lip plate is still an expression of social adulthood and self-esteem for a Suri woman and demonstrates respect for the Suri men.

Suri herders participating a funeral ceremony in Koka. The traditional funeral ceremony is a memorial day in honor of a deceased relative. In this case the man died over a year ago. But he was a very powerful and rich man and the family celebrated a big funeral ceremony where all families of the villages around Koka were invited. Similar to a Suri wedding ceremony also the funeral ceremony looks more like a military ceremony than a memorial day with a lot of Kalashnikovs and many many gunshots.

All guests of the other villages arrive in the afternoon to the ceremony with their cattle. In the village Koka itself a huge arch was build days before at the place where the honored man had lived. At the ceremony the cattle is herded through the arch and all people are dancing and singing. Accompanied with a lot of gunshots of the warriors of course.

From time to time a cow or a goat is killed in front of the arch. A cow is traditionally killed by a big stone, a goat by a big stick. The dead cattle lies in front of the arch the whole time during the ceremony. In the evening the real party begins with dances around the fire, more gunshots and with preparing of the killed cattle of the afternoon on open fire.
