Phantastic structure just up the way from us on the corner of Kildare Street at St. Stephen's Green, Dublin. The engraver was Thomas Badge, c. 1782-c.1841.

The excellent National Gallery of Ireland website tells us that in "1798, William Binns, an ironmonger, rebuilt what is now 25 and 26 St. Stephen's Green as a house with a toy and fancy goods shop, at the back of which, in Kildare Street, he erected a tower with 'gazebo' on top. The business ceased in 1816, when the stock and contents of the shop were auctioned. The whole premises, known as the Pantheon Phusitechnikon was later demolished."

According to my trusty copy of Kevin and Emer Rockett's Magic Lantern, Panorama and Moving Picture Shows in Ireland, 1786-1909, the viewing gazebo offered a panoramic view of Dublin, but was removed in 1821.

Size: 24.5 x 22.2 cm
Date: Circa 1808

Advertisement for Erson's Glycerine Cough Mixture, the pharmaceutical brain child of William Ledger Erson who operated as a pharmacist or druggist from 39 Henry Street, Dublin.

Wonder if it was as effective as Mr Erson made out?

I posted this advert on our NLI Facebook page some time ago, and got fantastic information from Celestine Rafferty about the Erson family:
"William Ledger Erson, b. St Michael's parish, Limerick, 30 October 1827, son of Paul Erson, merchant, and wife Anne. Had at least two brothers, George Robert, b. 24 Nov. 1829 and Charles, b. 9 Apr, 1836. Possibly other siblings.

Listed in 1862 as 'dentist, chemist, druggist' at 39 Henry Street, Dublin, with a residence at Mount Vernon, Dollymount. William married a widow, Bessie Martha Avery, née Close, daughter of Edward Close, a clerk in Holy Orders, in St Peter's parish, Dublin, 26th January 1850. William's brother, George Robert was one of the witnesses. They had at least two sons: Paul Close Erson, born December 1850 who died in November 1854, and William Robert Close, born 29 March 1857. He may be the William Robert Erson, physician and surgeon, living in Yorkshire in 1881. In 1899 Dr William Robert sailed, with 2 other doctors, on board the "Cintra" to Australia. He settled in a mining town in Western Australia and died there in 1904. Buried in Coolgardie Cemetery. ... William's mother's name was Ledger, hence his middle name. Oh, and they lived at Abbey Lodge, Askeaton. ... I found another son, Edward George Ledger Erson, b. 1852. Another doctor. Was tried in Australia c 1912/13 for being part of a scam to defraud a Maternity Benefits scheme. Died 1922."
