The hospital was well equipped to deal with birth emergencies, including the needs of premature babies. The stainless steel incubators used in the post-war era reflect a growing confidence in technology, but convey more of a science fiction, rather than domestic, aesthetic.

Inside the Operating Room, the windows have been screened, the gas mantles have been shrouded and the doctors and nurses are gowned and capped - but not masked.

Surgery is being performed under the glow of a single incandescent light. Dr A.P. Proctor, standing casually to the far left, observes the operation being conducted by Dr Robert E. Everything on the wards was done by the nurses and students, except cleaning floors and washing the dishes. Each ward had its own kitchen, and there were no wheeled carts so each tray was carried out by hand. These double-walled, silver-plated food warmers were originally filled with warm water, but due to inevitable spillage, warm sand was later used. The dumbwaiter in the background was used to carry meals to upper floors.

Mrs T.R. Poulton tags Dr G.F. Strong. Members of the Women's Auxiliary worked their magic to fund operating room equipment, the diet kitchen, the children's ward, the maternity ward and several private rooms. They started a library and purchased wheelchairs and stretchers.

One of the ways the members of the Women's Auxiliary raised money was through the annual tag days, where would stand boldly on street corners, stop cars and visit saloons and tagged everybody for a donation.

Spinal Chord Gala 2011 at the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, Vancouver General Hospital.

On November 5th, the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre at VGH was transformed into the backdrop for an evening of entertainment and fundraising for the 3rd Annual Spinal Chord gala. Spinal Chord grew out of a unique partnership between ICORD spinal cord research group, a partnership of VCH Research Institute, UBC Faculty of Medicine, and the Rick Hansen Foundation, and the Vancouver Cantata Singers, and raises funds for both organizations.

ICORD is using their share of proceeds raised at the gala for the Community Resource Centre at the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, which officially opened this past September.

As a patriotic gesture, VGH set up a tent hospital at the Vancouver Exhibition for the first time in 1914. Standing from left: Intern (later Doctor) H. W. Morley; Intern (later Doctor) Lavell H. For the nurses who could not travel home, special efforts were made to ensure that the Christmas holidays were celebrated. In thsi photo, Dr Robert E. McKechnie (left) and Dr J.M. Pearson are carving Christmas turkeys in the Nurses' Dining Room. McKechnie, the first president of the BC Medical Association, later served as chancellor of UBC, was active in provincial politics, and was legendary for his surgical skills.

The Occupational Therapy Program assisted patients in their recovery, kept them busy and helped them feel useful. The detailed work helped improve their coordination and concentration. The handicrafts made by the patients were sold to help pay for the costs of the program.

Vancouver General Hospital remembers 100 years: First horse-drawn ambulance

In 1902, the first project of the newly-formed Women's Auxiliary was to provide the hospital with a new horse-drawn ambulance, a vast improvement over the carts previously used to transport patients.

The first driver was Dick Woodrow, and the elaborate carriage lights on the ambulance were the envy of every other driver in the city.

The horses pulling the ambulance also served a role in the creation of sutures. At the time, there was little access to commercially-prepared suture material. The preparation of the suture material was one of the duties of the Operating Room nurses. Materials such as silkworm gut, catgut, silk, linen and horse hair were all carefully prepared. The resourcefulness of the staff in running the hospital was demonstrated by Nurse Jane Rose, who, when on duty in the Operating Room, would take advantage of the arrival of the ambulance to coax a few hairs from the manes of the horses.

Throughout the years, VGH reached out to the community by participating in city events and celebrations. This mobile hospital was first used for Vancouver's Jubilee Celebration in 1936. The sleek, aerodynamic trailer and its matching car, painted white with red crosses, were a crowd-pleasing hit. The trailer came complete with its own hot water supply.

The air pressure inside the chamber of the Iron Lung was alternately reduced and increased, filling and emptying the lungs of patients unable to breathe on their own. The Iron Lung was vital to the treatment of polio. Nurses were constantly on the alert for power outages tha could shut the machines down and cause the patient to suffocate.
