The Old Tree

This was a really old tree (Bender Oak, around 300 years old) on the Swarthmore College campus. They had been trying to save it for a couple of decades, with cables to hold the branches together, but eventually it was too far gone to save and they had to cut it down.

Since it was a campus fixture, rather than remove it completely, they left a large stump, which was carved into an oak leaf as a memorial.

Lettuce

We plant lettuce every week so we have a continuous supply for the stand. Leaf lettuce, Boston lettuce, Red lettuce (4 different kinds). Some of them are trial varieties. I'm always on the lookout for a good red lettuce to supplement my standard varieties.

I've taken pictures at this spot before, but I'm trying out the new camera and lens. Blocked most but not all of the sun with a tree limb. There's a little flare, but not enough for me to worry about. I don't see any ghosts. Good lens.

Well, it's that time of year again. I'm trying to get out of doing the boring tax stuff and greenhouse organization so I go around taking pictures. Besides, I need a bit of exercise.

I think I post a winter picture of the Delaney Flood Control Project every year, so it's tradition, and I wouldn't want to break it.

You can see from the condition of the road in the foreground how much snow we got from the "Major Storm" predicted for yesterday. Actually we got about a half inch, but by mid morning today it was melted where the sun hit it.

It's also pretty obvious that I used a polarizer, from the dark sky just right of the upper center. This is the +1 exposure from a 3-exposure bracket, with just a hint of highlight recovery thrown in. Looks like I have to work on my metering.

Local residents keep up this garden just to beautify the neighborhood. It's on a small triangle at a road intersection. The Assessors' map doesn't show a parcel number, so it's probably owned by the Town as part of the road.

Delaney in HDR

Experimenting with HDR. I don't generally like some of the highly processed photos I see sometimes so I thought I'd see what I could do to tame it a bit.

I can't say I'm happy with the clouds. I think they look too processed.

PS: There's a well-marked spot in the parking lot so I can take the picture from the same spot at widely different times, so you might be experiencing some déjà view.

PPS: If you blow this up to the original size you can see some of the branches doubled since they were blowing in the wind during the bracketing shots.

PPPS: I note that since Photomatix saved the shot as a tif, there's no EXIF data on this shot. You can see it here from one of the bracketing shots. I also note that if I had saved the result in jpg format I would still have some of the EXIF data on the picture, but not as much as the bradketing shot, which was converted in Lightroom.

Finally a fairly nice day after 2 inches of rain (just managed to fit in some April showers after a long dry spell). The leaves are starting to show.
