Daughter and I had a very nice and quiet outing to Brown Canyon Ranch last weekend. This is an outbuilding immediately off the house, which was built in 1905-07.

The families who occupied this homestead over the years ranched cattle for nearby Ft Huachuca, providing food for the soldiers.

The ranch house is currently undergoing renovation, hence the modern-day ladder perched against the building.

Monument Fire Recovery- a "century plant" in Brown Canyon, Arizona, USA

paint can pinhole camera, 22-sec exp, paper negative, developed with homemade caffenol CM

"Century plants" are agaves that put up an enormous stalk with beautiful pod-blooms at the end of it's lifetime. After the agave puts up this once-in-a-lifetime stalk, it dies. Some say the agave lives "a century' before it's final glorious presentation, and hence, it's name.

This area of the Huachuca Mountain Wilderness (near Brown Canyon) was untouched by the Monument Fire. This is at least partly due to the tireless efforts of the local and incident command firefighters, who did some preventative backburning here, as the fire rounded the mountain nearby at Carr Canyon. Ramsey and Brown Canyons (as well as the wildlife and folks living there) are safe, thank goodness.

Here is the cistern near the corral at Historic Brown Canyon Ranch at the base of the Huachuca Mountains. The windmill off to the right pumps water for the ranch, but I am unsure if it filled this small reservoir, or if recent rains had helped.

This image came out looking a lot more "busy" that I had originally seen. It's fascinating the details the camera will capture, which my awareness did not at the time. Awareness and imagination seem to combine to sense other things... (-:
Grasshopper Time at Brown Canyon Ranch

Homemade paint can pinhole camera, paper negative, 21-sec exp

Brown Canyon Ranch began operating in the Huachuca Mountains of southeastern Arizona in the early 1900's. It produced cattle, and was the beef supplier to nearby Ft. Huachuca in those early decades of it's operation.

At one time, a family of nine children lived in this little ranch home! (I'm guessing it has about 1,000 sq feet of space) In later years, the home was used as an office of ranch operations.

The Brown Canyon Ranch is being preserved and restored by the Friends of Brown Canyon Ranch, as a historical site.

With the tall grasses and seeds of late September, the grashoppers covered the ground, parting like seas in all directions as one walked.

Crunchy Footsteps posted a photo:

homemade paint can pinhole camera, paper negative, developed in homemade Caffenol CM developer, color and Kim Klassen's "warmsun" texture added in Photoshop

This is a colorized version of this picture.

I colorized it today, in place of a nice hike in our reopened Ramsey Canyon.
We made it to Ramsey Canyon, but 15 minutes into our walk, a young bear ran by! So we decided our hike was over for the day. Colorizing this image of Brown Canyon (just down the road from Ramsey) became the substitute for the hike, but boy, was it fun, too!
