In September 2010, Christchurch was shaken by the magnitude 7.1 Darfield earthquake, caused by movement
along faults west of the city on the Canterbury Plains.

The violent magnitude 6.3 earthquake that devastated Christchurch on 22 February 2011 was caused by movement along a fault that lies within about six kilometres of the city centre, along the southern edge of the city killing 185 people. Canterbury TV (CTV) building where 115 people lost their lives 72 students and nine staff of King's Education died when the CTV building collapsed on 22 February 2011. The King's Education School catered to students from Japan, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and Korea.

Many from overseas came to remember the dozens of people from the King's Education School
for English Language who died in the CTV Building collapse.

The empty concrete site of the CTV Building was opened for grieving friends and family to pay
their respects on the second anniversary of the February 22 earthquake.
115 people died in the six storey building
