Cheetahs_Philadelphia Zoo

MDunckley posted a photo:

Another shot from the weekends trip to the Philadelphia Zoo. The zoo was practically empty so we strolled about the place and enjoyed having the animals to ourselves. I was loving the fact that I could take pictures of the animals as if we were having a 1-on-1 photo shoot. I was surprised by how many of the animals were out and about in the chilly temperatures, there were some no shows but not enough to spoil the day.

This was a particularly hard shot to edit for me. The wooden walls featured on parts of their enclosure just made for an unattractive background, I wish that the cheetahs had done this with the grass of the hill behind them or that the wooden walls were further back so that they could have blurred to help make the cheetahs pop and take the shot out of the Zoo environment. Plus in B&W or color the wooden background was too similar in tone to get any kind of natural contrast, if only they weren't so good at blending into their surroundings, Ha !

Even though my picky eye isn't completely happy with the shot I still think it works, most of the time that I was shooting them they kind of kept some distance between each other, but for only the briefest of moments they turned and gave each other a quick sniff before continuing to pace and survey their surroundings.

This was shot towards the end of the day when the sun started to go down. We had heard a loud roar and rushed over to the lion enclosure. It was tough to get any shots of the lions cause they stayed near the back of the enclosure blocked by some faux ant hills & boulders. But for a brief moment this male walked towards me and rubbed his head on the dirt mound. I knew that when I got home I could make this look great with a bit of tweaking of the Levels & Curves in Capture NX2. By now you may have noticed that a lot of the shots are in B&W, I just wasn't digging the colors & the light on the day so most of them were shot with B&W in mind.

Went to my local zoo in Wilmington,Delaware. Despite being very small it was nice to be able to just pop out and see some interesting animals.

This Bobcat was pacing back and forth in an agitated state, It seems he doesn't appreciate the fact that his Fox neighbors get fed before him. He kept coming back to this spot on the log and I waited for him to stand still long enough to get a decent shot.
Cromer Pier, England_02

This weekend I got a few old negatives scanned at my local photo store. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting on my bed, searching through all of my old negatives. So when I found these shots from a past trip to England, I knew they were the ones I wanted to get scanned.

Cromer is small coastal town that we used to visit while over at my Grandparents. My fondest memories of Cromer are of the times we spent walking along the tops of the high cliffs, eating fish & chips, and watching people fish for crabs off of the pier. It's just one of those places that stays with you. I think this trip was right after my first year at art school, maybe around 2004-2005. In those days I only had my trusty Nikon N80 to shoot with, a great camera that got me through school without any problems. I would love to get back there with my D7000 and with everything that I've learned since then about photography.
Red-capped Mangabey_Philadelphia Zoo

Went to the Philadelphia Zoo today with my Mum, who was enjoying a long weekend.

The indoor enclosures at the Philadelphia Zoo are some of the best that I have seen, all had very clean glass, nicely sized, and had interesting habitats suited for each animal. Photography wise the light wasn't brilliant but they never really are so just having the nice clean glass with minimal reflections helped out a lot. I loved watching this Mangabey eat his lunch, the trainers had placed pieces of fruit & veg in a small barrel of mesh wire filled with hay so that he would have to find the opening and search for his food. I really liked watching him move it about, find the food, and move away to sit and eat his prize. This shot might be my favorite of the day but I still have a lot of images to go through and edit.

I spent about 30 minutes taking pictures of a trio of cheetahs who seemed to be putting on a show for me in their cage-less enclosure. It was slightly unnerving that there was barely anything between me and them, I'm sure if they were determined they could get out. But in terms of photos it was PERFECT. I only wish I had a better long zoom such as the 70-200mm 2.8 VR. But I shouldn't complain.
Cheetah_01_Philadelphia Zoo

Went to the Philadelphia Zoo today with my Mum, who was enjoying a long weekend.

Taken before the Philadelphia Union vs FC Dallas match this weekend. Union came back to draw 2-2 with two penalties.
