It feeds primarily on insects, especially caterpillars, which captures by examining the leaves, even in their lower parts. It is curious that even caterpillars eat with poisonous spines apparently. It also consumes berries, eggs of other birds, which is why it is often chased by suiriris and other species that are on eggs and chicks. Also hunt lizards and frogs.

Male

The male is more colorful than the female, with bright yellow eye of adult birds standing out black against the dominant side of the head and neck. Between the eye and beak, a white stripe, same color bottoms. The back is slightly bluish gray, like the tail. The long feathers of the wings are dark gray, occasionally observed in the bird inn. Since the female has the same general distribution of colors, except black head. The iris is yellow duller, and gray back. Bottoms slightly brownish tone. The beak is yellow, while the male is gray base with dark tip.
It is about 13 cm and weighs approximately 14 grams. It has gray cloak, iris and yellow legs. The female has no black design with its yellow and the lower jaw white.

Always very active during the hunts, occasionally emitting a call short and whistled.

Female

The jacamars are elegant brightly coloured birds with long bills and tails. The Rufous-tailed Jacamar is typically 25 cm long with a 5 cm long black bill. The subspecies G. r. brevirostris has, as its name implies, a shorter bill. This bird is metallic green above, and the underparts are mainly orange, including the undertail, but there is a green breast band. Sexes differ in that the male has a white throat, and the female a buff throat; she also tends to have paler underparts. The race G. r. pallens has a copper-coloured back in both sexes.

This large and extremely long-tailed cuckoo is 40.5–50 centimetres (15.9–20 in) long and weighs 95–120 grams (3.4–4.2 oz).[1] The adult has mainly chestnut upperparts and head, becoming paler on the throat. The lower breast is grey and the belly is blackish. The central tail feathers are rufous, but the outer are black with white tips. The bill is yellow and the iris is red. Immature birds have a grey bill and eyering, brown iris, and less white in the tail. It resembles the Little Cuckoo, but that species is smaller and has a darker throat
There are a number of subspecies with minor plumage variations. For example, P. c. mehleri, one of the South American subspecies, has mainly brown (not black) outer tail feathers. Additionally, the subspecies from Mexico, Central America, and northern and western South America have a yellow eye-ring, but this is red in the remaining part of South America.
It makes explosive kip! and kip! weeuu calls, and the song is a whistled wheep wheep wheep wheep.

Male

The jacamars are elegant brightly coloured birds with long bills and tails. The Rufous-tailed Jacamar is typically 25 cm long with a 5 cm long black bill. The subspecies G. r. brevirostris has, as its name implies, a shorter bill. This bird is metallic green above, and the underparts are mainly orange, including the undertail, but there is a green breast band. Sexes differ in that the male has a white throat, and the female a buff throat; she also tends to have paler underparts. The race G. r. pallens has a copper-coloured back in both sexes.

Male
