Wandering around Portobello Road market yesterday, I picked up a f1.7 Minolta Rokkor 50mm for £10.

On my old Lumix that's a 100mm f1.7 for €15 (manual focus of course, but hey)

And though not a macro it focuses at about half a metre

I think that's a bargain, he says smugly

One Sister (there should be seven)

Of course it was not the intention to take in churches on Monday. The real objective was to take advantage of the alignment of public holiday and the beautiful weather to go to the sea (alongside everybody else in London it seems).

Bad journey. My eight year old was sick, the car satnav broke down and we got lost. Traffic jams in country lanes. Bad temper

And about 100 metres from the sea we drove into a wall of sea mist. It went from the azure sky and balmy 22 degrees you see in some of the earlier pics to 10 degrees, clammy wetness and almost zero visibility.

So no towering panos of the chalk cliffs at Birling Gap, unfortunately (boo). But they have an eerie grandeur in the mist

Such inconveniences do not get between an Englishman and his beach fun though, no sir

St Michael and All Angels, Berwick is one of my favourite little parish churches, the 14 century church It is built on what may well be a pre-Christian sacred site from which there are magnificent views of the South Downs (which can be reached on foot from the church).

It is a fairly insignificant church in a fairly insignificant village. However, after the novelist Virginia Woolf went to live in nearby Alfriston, it became a country hangout for the Bloomsbury Set. What the locals must have thought of their bohemian ways is interesting, but the local vicar knew he was on to a good thing and commissioned the Bloomsbury artists, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell to paint the church during the Second World War (hence the servicemen in adoration to the left).

The angelic figures are depicted in a naive primitve style but the human figures are real portraits of local people (Christ in a classical iconographic style).

Old railway workers' houses near Waterloo Station

Gareth L Evans posted a photo:

(Best seen large)

The noises around my house. On cobbles bounding
Victorian fashioned drays laden with railway goods
their hollow sound like stones in rolling barrels: the stony hoofing of dray horses

Further the trains themselves; among them the violent,
screaming like frightened animals, clashing metal:
the declining sadness of crying along the distant routes
knitting together weather and dialects

Between these noises the little teeth
of a London silence

Hollow noises, noises of travel, hourly these unpick
the bricks of a London terrace.

Bernard Spencer (1909 - 1963)

Old railway workers' houses near Waterloo Station

(Best seen large)

The noises around my house. On cobbles bounding
Victorian fashioned drays laden with railway goods
their hollow sound like stones in rolling barrels: the stony hoofing of dray horses

Further the trains themselves; among them the violent,
screaming like frightened animals, clashing metal:
the declining sadness of crying along the distant routes
knitting together weather and dialects

Between these noises the little teeth
of a London silence

Hollow noises, noises of travel, hourly these unpick
the bricks of a London terrace.

Bernard Spencer (1909 - 1963)

I pass this old workshop every day in Garrett Lane in Earslfield.

Earlsfield has come up in the world recently. New shops and cafes pop up, a Carluccio's replaces a southern fried chicken shop.

But this old workshop has its back turned to change. It open every now and then, an old chap in blue cotton overalls and a toothbrush moustache rewinds electric motors, left over from days when things got repaired. It will pass as well and the developers will move in. And it will be a bit sad
