A 2 minute exposure at f/16 with a Tiffen ND 2.1 filter.

I didn't get there until after the sun had set due to heavy traffic along the Sea-to-Sky. I only managed a few shots before the available light was gone. This was one of the earlier shots. I like the motion of the boats in the water against the still background and the change in tone from foreground to back.

I recently downloaded the trial version of Silver Efex and played around on it with a few photos. Great program! I re-processed the original photo. Going through all the pre-sets, this one (silhouette) grabbed me immediately. It has a very graphical feel that lends well to the lines & tones of this image.

To compare, here's the original colour photo and here's the regularly processed black & white photo . I like this Silver Efex version best. How about you?

This was shot & submitted for Assignment #1 of the Long Exposure Photography course I am taking. It was the last of 3 photos submitted. This one is my favourite of the images taken that night.

In this 30s exposure, I managed to capture the blur of both Eastbound and Westbound trains as well as the lights from road traffic below the SkyTrain tracks. I wish there were more automobiles on the road but by this time, almost 8 pm, rush hour traffic was over. A shorter exposure would have rendered the moving vehicles and SkyTrain more visible, but a 30s exposure was one of the assignment requirements.

This image is actually flipped from the original. The balance here with the beach & pier emerging from the left appealed to me more.

For my 3rd assignment. One subject that really interests me is shooting industry and showing something that can be dirty and gritty, as opposed to pretty scenes and striking cityscapes.

As I was shooting, I realized that one crane was no longer looking he same as the other two; it's "neck" was going down. I managed a few long exposures before it fully dropped.

This was shot for the 2nd assignment for VPW's long exposure course I am taking.

I needed a day with some clouds but not completely overcast, a non-rainy day, and I needed it to happen on a day I wasn't working. It was indeed a tall task to ask for!

But somehow, beyond unlikely odds, I got all 3.

It was a sunny Sunday with blue skies and fluffy white clouds. You would think that would be great conditions right? NOPE! It was too sunny & bright and my ND filter was not strong enough to counteract that and achieve the assignment objective of submitting at least one photo with a minimum of 5 minute exposure. I also noticed polarization issues when I used it with my 10-22mm wide angle lens. When I later switched to the 24-105 lens, I didn't seem to have that problem.

I noticed a band of overcast clouds on the horizon in the distance. I was concerned this band of clouds would blow in and mess up my ideas. But in the end, it moved in enough to show a clearing in the sky beyond the clouds. It MADE my photo.

I waited 3.5 hours in very nippy, breezy weather -- yes, I stayed outdoors in all that time -- for sunset to approach. In the end, this shot alone made it a worthwhile wait & endeavour.

A Cameron ND fader filter was used to achieve the long exposure.

The squiggly line throw the lower third of the photo is a man at the front of a pack of joggers, possibly training for the upcoming Vancouver Sun Run, who was wearing a headlight on his head. The timing of that couldn't have been more perfect for me.

The Expo line's Main Street SkyTrain Station elevated above busy Main Street.

That bright dot in the sky is the planet Venus and the smaller dot at the top edge of the photo is the planet Jupiter.

At the end of the 1.5 hours spent shooting for my photo assignment, I returned to the Science World area and set up for a few more 30s exposures. Too bad about the wind causing the boats to rock about, resulting in blurriness.

Doesn't Science World look pretty all lit up like that?

PS. I did not submit this photo either.

I'm taking a class offered by Vancouver Photo Workshops on Fine-Art Long Exposures. For our first assignment, we were asked to submit 2-4 photos taken at night with at least one shot being 30s long exposure that shows both movement and stationary objects.

My first attempt the night before did not work out because of the rain. For my second attempt, I went down to the False Creek/Science World area.

This was one of the first shots I took. It was more a test shot to get a sense of timing & lighting at the time. I won't be submitting it as I had shot it using a ND filter and I don't think we are supposed to be using any filters for our first assignment.

I like this photo but I can see the flaws and what I would do to correct this. If I wasn't occupied taking the other photos you see following this one, I would have come back and taken this again a bit later when there is less ambient light in the sky. Also it was quite windy this day -- and hence the fuzziness in the booms at the bottom of the frame -- so I would like to reshoot this on a less windy day, preferably with more clouds as they would make the photo more dramatic. I'd also like to do a much longer exposure to show more movement in clouds and more silkiness in the water.

Van Dusen Garden, Vancouver, BC

It's been a while since I've had time for flickr. I've taken a fair share of photos in the past month (Oregon, Whistler area, a pumpkin patch, and now Van Dusen Gardens) but I haven't had time to do anything but upload the photos onto my computer.

Here's a quick look at what I did today, after spending the afternoon at the very beautiful & serene Van Dusen Gardens, a place I had not visited for 20+ years! This is actually the third waterfall I've photographed in the last 3 days.

I went to borrow a tripod from a friend for an upcoming camping trip -- mine is out-of-commission at the moment. And since I was in the Olympic Village area, I thought I'd try out the tripod and my newly purchased Cameron ND fader filter. Long exposures are FUN! 'Cept now I've discovered I need a remote trigger. [Scribbles 'remote trigger' on wish list]

This is shot from a different location, obviously. I quite like the vegetation in the foreground.
