I've never felt at home anywhere -not since I was about 8 years old. In all honesty, I still don't. I put down very few roots wherever I stay. I keep in touch with very few people. A lot of things just feel like extra baggage for me to carry around. I haven't known any other way of living, though. All I've known is the constant shuffling that kept happening in my life since I was a child. This place though, New York City, beckons me like it must to so many others. It can provide every need, every opportunity, every chance to do something -if you can make it, that is. It feels like it's the place where I can finally settle myself down.

Whatever this is supposed to mean, I wasn't around when it happened. I remember other things, though -perhaps I should remember them instead. I'll never forget how much I disliked this place and all the bad things that happened there. It felt like a prison that I just couldn't escape. I'm exposing a little bit of myself here with this one: I didn't like anyone. I couldn't find it in myself to get along with anyone or anything. It's because of forces that were beyond my control, there were things in my mind that I just couldn't help. That's my only regret in life, to be honest. To have missed out on certain things because I couldn't help myself because of the wall around me.

The image was originally wider, but of all the exposures I had taken, someone or something was in the frame causing a distraction. Oh well -at least I got this 1 nice photo out of it.

Cat On A Hat

That's it Flickr, I'm calling it. None of you ever need to take a photo of a cat ever again. This is the most interesting photo of a cat ever.

This is the only time I ever paid someone for a photo. I could have just taken it, but the guy was doing this for money, and a little bit of change went a long way. A real little bit, about 36 cents.

Mint Spring Valley Park

I used to live in Crozet in what I suppose was hundreds of years ago. Mint Spring is at the foot of a mountain range. It features a fishing resevoir and a swimming lake, or swimming hole I suppose you could call it. The terrain is very nice. This is the area right passed the Piedmont -right when the Application Mountains begin their climb. This is the first time I tried using a neutral density filter. An ND is good for timed exposures during daylight. They're sometimes a good alternative to a polarizer. If you look down at the tall grass you'll notice that it's blurred due to the long exposure during a wind gust.

This is the standard at Zuccotti Park; the bronze businessman with his briefcase. What's inside is a little out of date I suppose, but maybe it works fro the field he's in. During Occupy Wall Street this statue was dressed in a poncho and surrounded by messages and other miniature monuments to the cause. Now, this statue is back on the job. I guess he rides the wave, huh?

Quite an impressive piece of headgear. Hats usually protect our heads against the elements and help us to retain heat, since most of our body heat leaves through our neck and head. I don't know what this hat does, though. Seems fishy.

There was a little improvised dance competition near the east stage during the 2012 Sakura Matsuri. Some folks would get out and dance, leave, then return to the circle to one-up the person before them. After a while people started getting airborne.

I went to the Sakura Matsuri again this year. This time I came across a girl dressed as Rin who was with a friend dressed as Len. I took a number of photos of them. It's a habit to travel with a figure or two -and lucky me just happened to have both of these with me. They made for quite a redundant picture. I don't remember any names or if they said them at all. If you or your friend should read this, thank you for the pictures!

Shot on an Elan 7n using a 50mm Macro with Porta 400 film. I think it was Porta. Might have even been Ektar!

Occupy Wall Street Interview with Jeff

During my time in Liberty Park I did a number of interviews with people. I didn't have good access to the footage I had taken until recently. Please enjoy them as I share them. This one was recorded on October 19th 2011.

This is Jeff -you can hear his brief story and opinions by watching the video. Jeff was an unusual find in OWS as he was not an organic farmer/yoga instructor/waitress-actor/whatever you call being unemployed. There's no shame in it -just say it for crying out loud.

There were all kinds of media folks in Time Square doing some sort of reporting. This one was making footage for a sports review. He kept fumbling a certain part of the dialogue and kept starting over. While I would have loved to get his expression of disappointment, I felt it might be rude to capture him while he was down -especially when so close. But he kept going at it like a champ.

This is the back of Ambulance 145. The rescue squad has gone through a number of color patterns through the years. This is the most recent beginning a few years ago. Not every truck is re-stripped though. Only 3 of the 6 units are in this pattern.

The Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad was one of the first EMS agencies in the country. It is and always been an all-volunteer agency that operates on funds donated by the community. The agency never charges for any services rendered to a patient and is always ready to serve the community.

Either she was having a bad day or she was just native to New York City. Subways are interesting places. I've never hit the NYC system during rush hour. It must be worse than in D.C. In D.C. the infrastructure is sort of a joke. In NYC they've found a way to do everything in almost every way. If there's a traffic jam, people find ways to keep moving -and that is something I respect. The subway is a great alternative to surface transit, that's for sure.

Mr. Mendez is one of those unknown treasures of New York City. He can be found in different parts of New York City taking photos for tourists. He uses a Graflex 4x5 camera modified to shoot instant film. If you ever go to NYC, see if you can find Mr. Mendez and get your photo taken. On the bottom is an old style flash gun that uses bulbs. He usually buys his bulbs from a friend of mine here in town. When it's not working he uses the one above -and it is a clunky device that's good for being out of focus.

The last thing she remembers was falling asleep in Japan. On this day though, she found herself in a different place, somewhat familiar, but at the same time very different. Where is she? What happened while she was sleeping? She's alone a little worried, but maybe she'll meet up with a couple of lonely hearts who love music as much as she does...
