Unfortunately it was very dull and drizzling when A1 4-6-2 60163 Tornado and support coach appeared, on time, at around 6.30pm heading south. It was working from Millerhill Yard to Southall - the majority of this long distance movement was along the route that these engines were to be seen everyday during the 50s and early 60s

Local shunter 08501 (formerly D3656) on a trip working comes round the freight only curve heading for Dringhouses at Holgate, just south of the station. Behind can be seen 08540 (exD3704) on pilot duty and Class 45 45058 (formerly D97) waiting departure on a Trans-Pennine working

Steam was still occasionally seen here when this shot was taken of Hull's D6782 arriving on a fitted freight from the east (7Z64 ?)

The engine later became 37082, 37502 and finally 37602 and survives today (June 2013) with DRS.

Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48538 approaches from the Huddersfield direction with coal empties. My records show it to be a 16G Westhouses engine so it's a little off its usual stamping ground

Gateshead Class 47 47435 (originally D1550) leaves the Calder Valley mainline and takes the dive-under route to Huddersfield with this trans-Pennine express.

This Morane-Saulnier MS.315 (1932, used mainly as French Air Force training aircraft) flew over Grimsthorpe Castle, near Bourne, South Lincolnshire during the afternoon

Although they looks to be parked these two 40s are actually double-heading a freight out of the yard. They are 40040 and the now preserved 40145 still in green livery. Both were HM based. Behind are two shunters, the one to the right being 08308

Halifax
Crewe-based Class 47 47645 Robert Fairlie Loco Engineer (formerly D1659 and 47075) is seen leaving Halifax on the second of five special trains heading for Wembley for the RL Cup Final (they lost against Wigan)

Also appearing on were 47656 (ED), 47625 (BR), 47625 (BR), 47591 (ED) and 47426 (GD).
The other four special are already uploaded to Flickr under "Halifax & Calder Valley area"

Stockport Black 5 4-6-0 44916 passes 56D Mirfield depot with a tanker train for Lancashire. The good train disappearing out of view had Stanier 8F 48328 (10D) at the head. There were four WD 2-8-0s on shed - 90351, 90380, 90615, 90679 - one of this is under the coaling bay

Three not so good shots - all slightly blurred - at Mirfield all taken the same Saturday during June 1983

Top: 3.45pm - Tinsley Class 37 37107 speeds towards Healey Mills having come down the Calder Valley with this Saturday-only Blackpool-Sheffield train
Middle: 3.20pm - Toton's Class 45 45057 (formerly D93) heads east with another Saturday-only express - this time Blackpool to Newcastle
Bottom: 2.35pm - Class 45 45140 (formerly D102) speeds a Liverpool to Newcastle express towards Leeds

Looking very respectable considering the date, Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 44829 stands outside the depot at Bolton. This engine, built in 1944, served at many depots including Bristol Barrrow Road, Toton, Monument Lane, Bushbury, Holyhead, Saltley, Crewe South and Workington before arriving at Bolton during January 1968.

Behind is Hudswell Clarke shunter D2516, formerly of Workington, awaiting removal to C.F. Booths

Halifax Station

In typically wet weather Class 46 46010 (formerly D147) is ready to leave Halifax Station with the Saturday's only 7.57am Weymouth to Bradford express (see comments).

This engine had been stored at Swindon Works, but was re-instated to traffic on November 29th 1981. It survived another three years, withdrawal coming during November 1984. This is a very lucky locomotive, surviving today in preservation.
