This Buck seemed comfortable with me being fairly close, perhaps because it was barely light out. But he wasn't completely ignoring me -- note the ears zeroed in on my camera's shutter release noise -- he was multi-tasking. There was another Buck on the far side of the clearing and he was keeping an eye on his movements while keeping tabs on me by sound.

Shot in very low light, with a very slow shutter -- (f 7.1, 1/13 sec., 105mm, 500 ISO) He moved his back leg slightly as I shot, but I still liked the angle, and the way his well-polished antlers stood out against the background.

Some shots from the New England Aquarium. Shooting indoors, through glass, without a flash presents some focus and exposure problems, but there were some very cool critters and the teeth on this "harmless" shark were pretty impressive.

Boring tech note: The light was extraordinary, but some exposures were hard to compensate (i.e. shooting from deep shade into brightly lit foliage, etc.) so I spent most of the day shooting with a Tiffen Circular Polarizing Filter. I have found that it preserves the blue of the sky without compromising the vivid reds and yellows, and it prevents a lot of sky 'whiteouts' when shots include deep shadow and bright sky.

I was glad to get this Ruddy Turnstone in its intermediate plumage (halfway between breeding and non-breeding colors) against this familiar background. I think it shows how remarkably effective their camouflage pattern is in its normal habitat.
