I really like to have potato chips for breakfast on sunday.
Do not ask me why but that has been a long time tradition of mine.
Today however I have decided to cook something good.
Eggs with pickles, onions, meat and some roasted bread on the side.
Good morning and enjoy your lazy Sunday!
A day of eating, relaxing and watching documentaries about dogs, turtles and all kind of other stuff.

I am such an idiot that I have not visited our russian supermarket before!
When I saw what they had tears rolled from my eyes.
So much sweets, dried salted fish, grechka, sgusujonka, zefir, brinza, baltika and all kind of other awesome things!
Russian radio through the speakers and decent personal as well.
The sweets on this photo are some of my favorites of all time.
It was difficult to get hold of these back then in the Netherlands but sometimes my father could get a hold of some.
Our chocolate is very different from western chocolate. It does not melt! :)
As Im leaving Bremen soon I started to worry but thank god there are a bunch of stores in the Ruhrpott that are selling these as well! :)

Десна - USSR Folding Bicycle II

Olympus Pen E-P1 / M. Zuiko Digital 17mm
1/60sec ƒ/4.0 ISO500 no tripod
Post processing with: Lightroom 4

Bremen, Germany

( same text on both photos )
I will not bore you with 20 detail shots of this bicycle..so here are just 2!
This is a soviet folding bicycle called Desna. Information or photo material of this bicycle is very rare on the internet. However I am pretty sure that you can find a bunch of these still around in Russia.

My father bought this bicycle around the age I Was born.
It is also the only bicycle he ever bought in a bicycle shop for as far as I know.
Back then nobody had any childseating on bicycles in Russia and during a trip to western Europe he has found a child seat.
On this child seat he has carried me around Moscow on this tiny 20'' bicycle.

When we left Russia to live in western Europe we could not take this bicycle with us on the plane.
My grandmother went by train from Moscow to the south east Netherlands and brought this bicycle with her!
There she was picked up by our friends in a car and the bicycle was hanging half out of the car and on the way the bar fell of the bike and got lost on the highway.
My father went back to the highway by himself to search for the bar and found it back again!

We have used this bicycle every day for about 20 years. It has seen moscow completely, almost whole Netherlands and parts of Germany, Belgium and France.

I have cycled on it through sinksand and military shooting ranges on dutch Isles.
It has been through more then a lot of shit.

However for the past 10 years it has been standing in a humid bicycle shed without any use at all.
Eventually exactly these 10 years in permanent humid and non-use environment has killed this bicycle.
The condition is terrible and all parts are totally dead.

Due to the extreme heavy use of this tiny bicycle all parts have been replaced by western parts...more or less the only original thing left is actually the bicycle frame itself.
This will make my work actually a lot lighter as I have thrown almost all old parts away

With the start of spring I will start working on this bicycle.
It will become a beautiful summer cruiser and will get a lot of love and attention again.
A new chapter will start soon for this bicycle that has seen more of the world then most people do.

If I will manage to save up 5000 EU for a year of work and travel in New Zealand it will be this bicycle I am taking with me to cycle around the two isles!

Soundtrack for this photo

P.S: After a closer look the crankset is still the original one.
The aluminum dressguards are also the original ones!

P.P.S: After searching Flickr for a pretty long time it seems that there were only two photos of these bicycles before I have posted these ones.
Here are the links:
www.flickr.com/photos/pasha_xvi/7208465328/
The aluminum dressguards are also the original ones!

P.P.S: After searching Flickr for a pretty long time it seems that there were only two photos of these bicycles before I have posted these ones.
Here are the links:

It has been through more than a lot of shit.

This is something that has really made me happy. :)
After some cards that were so-so I have received a beautiful envelope from one of the most amazing places in Europe.
The postcard itself is from Ljublanskij Grad where we have been last spring.
She was so kind to add a bunch of stamps as well and everything just fitted perfectly together.
Thank you very much! :)

Healthy, lightweight and simply delicious food!
Add some nice bread and what else do you need?

Diamant Damen Luxus Sportrad Model 209 ( made in 1959 )

Sony Xperia Arc S
1/640sec ƒ/2.4 ISO80 no tripod
SOOC

Bremen, Germany

This is a Damen Luxus Sportrad made by Diamant back in 1959 in Karl-Marx Stadt ( now Chemnitz ).
This model is rare. And even more rare is to find it in such a perfect condition.
Fortunately I have stumbled upon it by accident and for the small price of only 75 Euro.

The seat and bar are not original but are most probable GDR as well.
The light was broken but I have fixed it. Light is 60s or newer GDR light.
If you look carefully you can see that the rims are slightly different from each other.
The rim of the front wheel is made out of aluminium while the back rim is made out of steel.
Both original RENAK however.

The most curious oddity about this bicycle is this:
It has 4 speeds which function over a derailleur AND at the same time the hub has a brake!

Basically the only thing that needs to be done on this bike is to change the tires as these are still the original Pneumant ones from the GDR AND the wheels need to be trued.
But even those tires are still good..

All in all pretty lucky and Anke is the happy owner of this beautiful bike now.

Click here to see photos of this bikes younger brother.
#3/52.13 - Zen and the art of Pride.
For the third photo of this years 52 weeks project I have revisited a old school building I have found back in 2008 or in 2009. I was curious if the building was still there as it might have been demolished. To my joy the building is still there!

''Die kelle blinkt - wenn sie arbeitet'' means that the tool that the brick mason uses shines when she is at work.
This wall art is an interesting piece of working class pride and I wonder how old it is.
I think maybe from the 60s or 70s but maybe I am wrong.

The location is geo-tagged in case someone would like to see this in person.

And here is some nice music to enjoy xD

Enjoy the good weather and see you next week!

Hello World,

The second photo for the 52 weeks project focuses on a theme that occupies me more and more lately.
Ostalgie.. A German term to describe Nostalgia for the former East.

( Edit: Personal angry ramble deleted )

About the stuff on the photo.
The 25 DDR pin is a celebration pin of the 25th birtday of the GDR
The RENAK pin is quiet rare I think and I feel lucky to have obtained it.
The RENAK screw is coming from a front wheel of a Diamant Damen Luxus Sportrad Model 209 from 1959 that I have bought recently in a total good condition for a price so little it is simply ridiculous!
The small tool is a spoke tool from the former GDR nad I have used it to build my RENAK wheel set with the original KEBA spokes.
The postcards I have used as the background come from a 100 GDR postcard pack I have bought from ebay for a couple of euros. I am using some to collect and some to still use and send them to people.

Well..Thats it for this week.
Next week something totally different!

P.S : If you type DDR into maps it says it cannot locate the location xD So I placed it on the map. xD

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone had a good and safe new years eve!
We had a good time and had a lot of good food as you can see in the last photo of 2012.
This year I am doing a ''52 weeks project'' on Flickr.
I am going to do all 52 photos as in-cam square format shots and the subjects will be selected carefully for one reason or another.
There are more photos of course but elsewhere on the web or not online at all.
For the first photo of the year I have decided to revisit a spot I have discovered in the early days of my stay in Bremen.
It is one of the best places in Bremen and provides you with a decent view in all four directions.
My friends liked it here and also various couchsurfers who have visited us from different countries.
It is a place to exhale and let go.
Possible to be enjoyed in company as well as alone.
Accessible for people in wheelchairs and Geo-tagged for your convenience!

Zen and the art of going on ( or: The world did not end after all )

Sony Xperia Arc S
SOOC

Bremen, Germany

So...I have been very active on flickr for the past five years now.
Crazy how fast that time has gone by and how long I was not bored by something.
Now however I do not feel like doing a photodiary anymore so I want to do something else with Flickr in 2013.
Im just not sure what yet...
Maybe a 52weeks project to keep it on a low flame but still going.
Maybe a 52weeks project and additional other specific projects.
Maybe only travel photos?
I dont know..What I do know is that all content that is now on the stream will stay here for another 9 months or so.
Yet do not expect too much in 2013.

I do know that I want to start a food and drink blog and If I really am going to pull that through...I am going to spend a lot of time cooking and trying out new things.

For the past month I have also been more or less photographing only with Instagram and I really love it.
However now Instagram has been bought by Facebook and its privacy policy changes on 16.01.13 and I really doubt that I will upload new stuff there after 15.01.13.

I wonder why cool networks like instagram and couchsurfing get fucked up and can not just stay as they are.
I also extremely dislike the small changes in flickr layout and in the layout of the android app.
What however is very cool is that I have found a project based on writing and mailing things and I will focus also a lot on that in 2013 as its again a different way of communicating with people all across the globe.

The world did not end in 2012 but to be honest I did not even had time to think about things like that.

My hair gets way too long and its time to crop it again. Note also the Kranj shirt. I miss Slovenia and I want to go back.

New Years blabla aids list for 2013:

- Move to Ruhrpott for 2 years or ruhrpott exploration.
- Save money for travel and in best case a year of work&travel in New Zealand
- Send and receive lots of snail mail all over the globe
- Take out second wisdom tooth
- Celebrate new years eve with my parents
- Start a food and drink blog
- Lose weight and start to work out
- Learn proper stick fighting
- Learn better German
- Learn better written Russian
- Keep the proper people that I have in my life right now
- Find new proper people
- Get more healthy and stay healthy
- Work hard
- Stay proud

I wonder if any one of you is on Last.fm as I am a lot online there lately and on Instagram?
Or maybe other networks and what other alternatives you use or like for Flickr?

Well..this is most probable the last photo I post in 2012 but maybe there will be another one.

I also want to say a special thanks to:

Anke for the million awesome things you brought in to my life.
Supermarketsong and Helleanor for your information, friendship and hospitality in France.
CmdrCord for the ocasional Urbex trips.
Rumn8tor for doing a haiku book project with me and all the other things.
Lupinehorror for the pro account and following and supporting this nonsense.

Mito, Florian, Angsthase, Herr Skygge, Bikjo, Kankert, Flickranet, TooLoose-LeTrek, I still believe in u, Knitgirl, Dirk Duckhorn and Miradel for following me.
This was a very pleasant surprise!
Today when I got out of the tram I stumbled upon this beauty!
Almost everything on this bike is still original GDR stuff and in a really decent condition!
I really hope that this beauty will survive another many many years in loving hands.

Olympus Pen E-P1 / M. Zuiko Digital 17mm
Post processing with: Lightroom 4

Bremen, Germany

I have bought this bicycle for only 51 eu on Ebay.
Wanted a Diamant so badly for a long time but they always went away for much too much.
Frame and fork only went away for 70-80eu. Here I have a complete bicycle for 51 eu!

The first day I have cycled about 40KM on it and everything seems fine.
Its first day out was a mass ride with more than 5000 people over closed off highways.
A warmer welcome was not possible! :)

I am not sure what I want to do with this bike but I will keep it for at least the next 2.5 years.
In any case I will buy some strong and beautiful spokes and put them in the wheels myself.
Other than that there still needs a lot of cleaning to be done.
I also need a smaller cog on the backhub as it is not possible to go really fast with it now.

I know there are many Diamant bikes in much better condition but I have never been more happy with a bicycle as with this one.
It is an awesome singlespeeder and light as fuck!
And it comes not only from a different time but from a different world as well.
wow...
