The City of Chicago Calumet Incinerator was torn down years ago (early 90's, I think) but the sign still stands for some reason. This artifact was pointed out during the Forgotten Chicago Industrial Might & Architectural Surprises Bus Tour.

The UIC Digital Collections Flickr page has a couple photos of the incinerator circa 1972, here and here.

The Red X suggests that it's vacant (something I was unsure of before), but there are still a few lights on inside at night. Go figure.

In case you were wondering (like I was) why so many vacant buildings in Chicago now have a Red X sign: "Mayor Rahm Emanuel and 50th Ward Alderman Debra Silverstein introduced an ordinance that will allow the Chicago Fire Department to mark buildings that have compromised structural stability to ensure the safety of fire responders....the Fire Department, in conjunction with the Department of Buildings, will identify structural conditions on buildings that could create collapse danger for responding crews in the event of a fire...Private contractors, paid for by the grant, will supply and install the markers, which are highly-visible reflective emblems, 24 inches square, and feature a large red X." Not many mid-century-ish duplexes in Chicago with curved driveways in front. Certainly not around Bridgeport.

(It was difficult to get a good shot of the house/driveway in context with the surrounding two-flats and three-flats--Google Street View actually does a better job at that than this photo. I'll try again later, maybe.)
