Narrowboats move surprisingly slowly. Walking alongside one is like being with an elderly relative, or shuffling your way through the crowds in a shopping centre at Christmas. But I imagine it must be a fantastic way to relax (so long as you don't get stressed by an intermittent Internet connection).

If I was homeless I think I'd sleep out on Bankside because there always seems to be someone giving away free stuff. Yesterday it was free bread; today I met Danny the Elf giving away free chocolate coins. A grown man dressed as a child-friendly elf, giving away free chocolate… he'd probably be arrested in most parts of the UK, but it works in a metropolis like London.

Danny is Italian and this is a temporary job for him. Elf work is seasonal, apparently. Who'd have guessed?

Like yesterday, this was perhaps a little too easy for a proper strangers project since it's easy to strike up a conversation with someone dressed as an elf. Or maybe that's just me?

As I get near the end of my 365, I'm thinking about what to do next year. So I've thought about the photos that I enjoyed taking the most this year and by a long shot, those photos are the ones with people in.

So my next project will be a "100 Strangers" project, where I take photos of complete strangers (with their permission).

I'm staying in London at the moment, and I've seen these guys early in the morning handing out free French sticks as a promotion for a local bakery. They were both French, which made communication difficult, but interesting. Because they were very welcoming I thought this would be an easy place to start a strangers project and they were more than happy to be photographed.

One problem I'll face with this project is that I don't live in London, but somewhere much more provincial. I'm not sure how the people who live near me will take to this idea. But let's see.

I thought Italian drivers were crazy, but they have nothing on Indian drivers. The horn seems to be as important to the driver as a steering wheel.

I took this with my iPhone and thought the surreal effect nicely captured what it's like being a passenger in an Indian cab.

This is my daughter, Bethany. She's at Uni in London and has really taken to it. It was lovely to see her so passionate and animated about her studies and her life.

I wanted to do a big production number for today's shot as it's number 300 in my 365.

But frankly, I'm swamped.

Things have got crazy busy at work and if I hadn't got this far in my 365 I'd probably give up on it.

I'm hoping I can do something a little more imaginative over the week-end, but right now this captures how I feel: swamped.

Tyne Cot war cemetery in Ypres. 12,000 graves. 8,000 with "unknown" headstones.

There was a quotation I heard a while back that was going through my head when I took this. "When one person dies it's a tragedy. When 10,000 die it's a statistic". I wanted to capture both the individual tragedy and the wider statistic in this image.

This week's Project52 assignment is to document a road trip. It's for a series of 5 photos, and this is my first.

This is Mow Cop Castle, a photogenic folly. You can read more about it at a web site dedicated to Mow Cop.

There were quite a few people visiting the folly,so I used an ND10 filter with a long exposure to make them go away. Those ghostly figures to the right of the castle are some people who stayed still for a while.

I'm not sure if it's a characteristic of long exposures (this was about 2 minutes) of if this filter isn't very neutral, but it does create these beautifully warm colours, almost like HDR.
