Description: The Boobook is the smallest Australian owl. It has dark brown feathers with spots of white and grey. Its eyes are often bright yellow. Females are bigger than males.

Diet: This bird is a carnivore and eats small mammals, birds
and invertebrates.

In the wild: The Boobook is renowned for its acrobatic skill in catching invertebrate prey such as moths, beetles, spiders and crickets. Rodents, small bats, frogs and birds are also targets.

Like many Australian birds, Boobooks build nests in hollow trees. They also roost there during the day, coming out only at night. They are often found in the suburbs where they feed on the introduced House Mouse.

The famous naturalist and Author Pete Dunne nicknamed the Reddish Egret "the Tyrannosaurus Rex of the Flats, it certainly was very entertaining for me and my Buddy Stan Hope who was my host in Florida, Thanks again my friend for the perfect break and wildlife trip. This was taken at Fort de Soto

The Ural owl is a large species of owl found throughout Northern Europe and Asia. They have mixed plumage, which is mainly brown with flecks of grey, cream and white. They have a large, white, facial disc, the shape of which helps them to hear moving prey.

Another splish spash shot this time the Brahminy Kite a species that is now endangered through the pet trade, and in some cultures persecution as it is seen as a bad omen due to it's association with Fire. Like all kites it is a fabulous flier, and not afraid to fish and can swim!

Back to images taken on my Florida trip in February this was taken at one of the Lakes in Downtown Lakeland City! Where to my surprise we saw numerous other birds and even a Bald Eagle..

Black Bellied Plover

The Black Bellied Plover or Grey Plover is a large plover that is hard to ID but the very short hind leg is a good clue, in the Winter Plumage as shown here, where there are no signs of the black belly it has during the breeding season. This was also taken at Fort de Soto on my bird trip last month.

Again from my Florida trip, and at the previous Location of Fort de Soto,, The green scrub at the top of the frame was unavoidable if I was to get this pose I was after as it was sneaking towards a lizard it had spotted on the tree trunk..

This Great Egret captured at Fort de Soto Florida a wonderful spot for Shorebirds and also a host of other species which I will be posting soon. Unlike the UK I was sitting nearby under the shade and this beauty landed nearby and had a nice scratch!

These Grackles proved to be both very entertaining and rather beautiful, what with the interesting courting behaviour and iridescent feathers.. Captured at Gatorland Florida last month.

Osprey with Lunch

I did manage to get a few fishing Osprey this trip, and often not before they had chewed off the head first I assume the most nutritious part, and fastest way to kill the prey.

Lake Istokpoga and Blue Cypress Lake being amazing places for this beautiful bird of prey.

Winter and heavy snow preventing a lot of travel in the UK but my backyard having a few visitors like this Fieldfare in the snow.

The English common name Fieldfare dates back to at least the eleventh century. The Anglo-Saxon word feldefare perhaps meant traveller through the fields. Alternatively, it may be derived from Old English fealu fearh, literally grey piglet.
The species was described by Linnaeus in his Systema naturae (1758) under its current scientific name. The name Turdus pilaris comes from two separate Latin words for thrush.

The Reddish Egret is considered one of the most active herons, and is often seen on the move. It stalks its prey visually in shallow water far more actively than other herons and egrets, frequently running energetically and using the shadow of its wings to reduce glare on the water once it is in position to spear a fish; the result is a fascinating dance and I will post several shots of this behaviour at another time..

Due to its bold, rapacious yet graceful feeding behavior, author of a great companion field guide, Pete Dunne nicknamed the Reddish Egret "the Tyrannosaurus Rex of the Flats". It eats fish, frogs, crustaceans, and insects. The bird's usual cry is a low, guttural croak.

Florida proving to be a superb hunting ground for wild birds and thanks to my Buddy Stan Hope for showing me around.. No amount of thanks can be enough, we were both stunned when we paid a visit to the Blue Cypress Lake when this American Peregrine Falcon zoomed in and landed in Tree less then 10 feet away! I will be here for another 9 days and have shots from most of the best locations.
