This is an older photo taken from my 2005 archive. I found this turtle near my neighborhood, crossing the road. It was leaving a field that was being cleared for new home construction. I relocated it to nearby Hillsboro Pineland Natural Area, since its old home was being destroyed. I have not seen any Florida Box Turtles in the wild since this last encounter.

I spotted a Killdeer couple walking around the parking lot at the end of Lee Road. They would sometimes stop and preen at the shallow pool of water that had accumulated at one end of the parking lot.

Leatherback turtle hatchlings are more delicate than other sea turtle hatclings and require specialized care in captivity. They are teathered by a swivel and fishing line to keep them from bumping the edge of the tank. Since they do not recognize boundaries; the hatchlings would simply end up hurting themselves by bumping up against the edge of the tank if left to swim free.

A very small individual, only about .5 inches in length. It's resting on the frond of a Giant leather fern (Acrostichum danaeifolium). It is a highly invasive non-native species in Florida, having replaced the native tree frog popluations in many areas.

Hatchling Loggerhead sea turtles climb over one another as they emerge from thier nest. These hatchlings are part of a very large nest with over 85 eggs that was rescued from being washed away by waves from Tropical Storm Isaac.

Found in southeastern Florida, the Bahamas, and Cuba. The Florida populations of this butterfly were almost wiped out by urban development. Planting native cycads, called Coontie, helped the species rebound.
