We went up to Schulman Grove in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest last Wednesday. We got snowed on so we weren't able to get too far.

Many of the trees in this particular part of Schulman Grove are old but not ancient. This is one of them.

The grainy effect is from the falling snow. Since they don't plow the road to the grove and we didn't have our chains, we did not want to get stuck. It was actually quite enjoyable but we obviously have to go back!

These trees tend to grow apart from each other. At these heights, the distance between trees allows each one to receive the maximum nutrients from its surroundings.

The Springs Fire burns in the Santa Monica mountains close to Cal State University at Channel Islands. In spite of the heavy smoke and ashfall, workers were still in the fields. The hill in the foreground had been burnt the day before. At this point, the winds were still mostly flowing offshore but were beginning to shift.
