I took a crack at the Whirlpool Galaxy on Mount Tam in early March. Very difficult to get useful data under high winds. Only 8 subs out of a pool of 30 light frames.....wind and AP don't mix!
8 X 3min subs @ ISO 1600.

Absolutely tickled that I'm able to pull off some astro imaging from home. It's nice to sitting at my kitchen table sipping coffee while collecting data. Adding a light pollution filter to the camera has made a stunning difference at what the camera can see in a densely populated urban environment. I've been focusing on open clusters while I experiment with longer subs from my back deck. These subs were at 75 seconds, which is a record from my home observing location. I'm going to take a crack at the Rosetta Nebula on the next clear and moonless night.

Last Saturday concluded the star parties on top of Mount Tam for 2012, it's been a great year of astronomy. A small group of die hards met on the Mountain for observing, braving the cold temperature, even dropping below freezing by mid night. This is object M33, the Triangulum Galaxy. It's very dim and barley detectable in the eye piece of the telescope. I'm glad a brought a thermos of coffee for this very cold night.

Jupiter Take 2. Under improved seeing. Web Cam video shot @ 3 min and processed with Registax 5, CS6. 2x Barlow on Cam. The goal of this project is improved resolution, resolution of the "Great Red Spot" and inclusion of Galilian moons, which are not resolving when I boost magnification with Barlow lens.

There is a part of San Francisco that doesn't include the tragically hip, yuppies and high-tech cutting edge 20 year somethings. Some people still go out every morning and do battle with the Pacific Ocean to make a living.

A 30 second exposure from my back deck, taken in the dead of night. The arc in the sky are lights from an aircraft leaving SFO. Light pollution in all its glory. This is my home observing site, The Bernal Heights Observatory.

I stand corrected. I moved the telescope just before imaging. these two clusters, NGC 659 and 663 are about two degrees away from M103. I thought something was amiss, but I wasn't sure. A lot can go wrong in astro photography, starting with installing the camera and bumping the scope. Thank you astronomy net for clearing this up. M103 was the intended target. These two clusters are a fine substitute.
