I can't remember seeing clouds that low. A rather unusual view of clouds lingering below the horizon long after the sun has set. Yes, it's a night shot.

Full Moon On The Ratenpass

This is a manipulated image! I replaced the washed out moon with a detailed moon. The moon picture was taken ten minutes after I captured the landscape picture. To the right you see the Grosser Mythen (1'898 m/6'227 ft). It's the landmark of the canton of Schwyz. On its summit is a restaurant. To get there you have to walk up, there's no gondola cableway. I wonder how they get the beverages up there. I guess with a helicopter.

It snowed end of October in Central Switzerland which is quiet unusal, so there was plenty of snow on the Ratenpass (1'077 m/3'533 ft). Another curiosity was that my Lee filters froze because the mountain pass lay in thick clouds, mist, and the temperatures were below zero. A thin sheet of ice covered them, I couldn't use them. Nevertheless, this didn't prevent me from taking pictures. Down in the valley you can see some houses of Rothenthurm, the village is more to the right though, all I had to do is wait for some nice light, then press the shutter.

Ranting And Raving

At first I didn't like this photograph. I took it last autumn on the Bruderholz before the sun rose. It was extremely hard to find a proper composition because the Bruderholz isn't ”photo friendly” at all. Power lines, ugly fields and farmhouses, paved paths, cars, people (yes, there were some around that early in the morning), flat and boring landscape brought me to despair. Luckily, I found this tree which I could use, without any ”man-made stuff” in the frame. Switzerland can be a pain in the butt, it's so crammed full of fields, cow pastures, roads, houses, villages, people, power lines (they're everywhere! I hate them!), gondola cableways, ski lifts, and other ugly man-made stuff, you really have to look long and hard for a ”nature only” composition. You won't find any vast unspoilt landscapes here like say in the UK or the US. It's frustrating! Sorry for the ranting, but I had to get this off my back.
I guess the reason I didn't like this image was the more or less ”forced” composition. I would have prefered to show more of the landscape but, as mentioned above, this wasn't an option.

It's been a while since my last non-landscape photo. This image was shot in the picturesque old town of Trogir which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The town exists since 2'300 (!) years. Strolling through the narrow alleys puts you back in time. Getting the photo done was no easy task. As you can imagine, the town was overcrowded with tourists. While composing this picture people were queuing up (!) behind me, waiting for me to get the photo done! The image is a 15 seconds exposure with mirror up which made things even worse. I'm really thankful no one walked into the frame. And many thanks to all the unknown who didn't lose patience.

There is only one lighthouse on Dugi Otok. It's located on the northwest coast of the island near Veli Rat and is a holiday apartment.

Never Forgotten

This photo brings back memories. It was taken on a karst hill surrounded by wilderness. Getting up this hill was brutal, even though it isn't a high hill. Sharp-edged rocks and thorny shurbs made the climb very unpleasant. The worst part were the sharp-edged rocks. The northeast part of the hill, not seen in the picture, is littered with them. To get up the hill I had to jump from rock to rock, there was no other way to ”climb up”. Even though I'm a very careful climber I slipped and my foot got stuck between two sharp-edged rocks. My sock was shredded to pieces and my ankle was a bloody mess. The pain almost made me faint. I had a mission and there was no time to play sissy. I pressed on and ignored the pain. Thankfully, I didn't break any bones. Up on the hill the wind was extremely strong. I had to wait quite some time for some nice light. Due to the strong winds the light came and went. Another problem was to keep the tripod steady to get a sharp image.
My wound on my ankle took four months to heal. I've got a big scar on my ankle now, reminding me of this beautiful place. Never forgotten!

The Telašćica National Park expands over a 70 km2/43 mi2 region and is located in the southeast part of the island of Dugi Otok. A rather unusual lake called Mir can be found within the park. It's a lake with salt water instead of freshwater.

I guess you don't get to see deserted beaches that often nowadays. This beach goes on for miles and there was no human to be seen. I wouldn't recommend walking barefoot here though.

The Cliffs Of Dugi Otok

The highest cliffs in the Adriatic are those on the westshore of Dugi Otok, which are around 200 metres/656 feet high. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to capture the sheer height of those cliffs. Should have found another spot.
