Granite Island was once home to thosands of these little penguins. In recent years however, their numbers have dwindled alarmingly. Many factors have been at play, including increasing seal numbers, attacks from territorial flying birds, rats and feral animals and lack of food. The most disturbing factor though has been human intervention.These few penguins at the Penguin Centre on the island are rescued birds that cannot be released back into the wild because of injuries that prevent them from hunting for food. One of them is recovering from being dragged out of its nest and thrown at a rock by a child!
