When I stopped by Priory Park yesterday to photograph the old Priory ruins, I never expected to find a crocus carpet beneath the trees. It was a wonderful surprise and had to be recorded!

I have often driven past this old cottage, and marvelled at how small it was compared to surrounding buildings. It stands on the main road leading to the bridge over the River Severn in Bridgnorth low town, dated 1570.
The passing modern traffic is almost continuous, and I reflected that when it was built, motor vehicles hadn't been invented, and that horse drawn carts would have been passing its door.

Bewdley had the flood barriers up, so we went further up river to Bridgnorth
to see the swollen River Severn. At places further up it was almost level with
the top of the banks. Here by the town, it is still rising with more heavy rain.

Despite the clouds, the rain held off and a visit to the coast was a welcome breath of fresh air on the day after Christmas.

A Mosaic for the Glass Museum

A few years ago I was commissioned to make a mosaic wall panel for the refreshment area at Broadfield House Glass Museum.
The work was to be based on selected works from their wonderful collection of glass work.
The only problem was that I had to design it, then have visiting children with their families paste up the design as an activity during the Stourbridge International Glass Biennial.
It was quite a challenge to select shapes and motiffs from the collection that would appeal to children, and draw up a design that was not too complex for beginners of all ages!
At the end of the day I took the work back to my studio to fix onto the board and grout.

Loch Leven Castle

The keep inside the courtyard of Loch Leven Castle, on a tiny island surrounded by water.
It was here that Mary, Queen of Scotland, was held prisoner, before escaping to a worse fate on the order of her Royal cousin in England.

Dudley Priory was founded around 1160 by Gervase Paganel, Lord of Dudley and dedicated to St.James. It was affiliated to the Cluniac community at Much Wenlock, and only a handful of monks lived at Dudley as the site is not large.
Today the gaunt ruins stand in leafy Priory Park.

On New Year's Day the River Severn was flowing fast and deep above Bewdley. With the recent rains it will be deeper still, and given a forecast of very heavy downpours to come over the weekend, they have just erected flood barriers below here to protect the town.

New Year gathering of gulls

These were only a fraction of the gulls wheeling around over the river.They seemed to be trying to attract the attention of passing people, in the hope of having some crumbs of food thrown their way.
Some cafes and a riverside chip shop were open, and they did get their share - including some of my sandwich!

It has been a bitterly cold grey day, so this seemed a more inviting place to view.
Taken in the tropical biodome at the Eden Project in Cornwall. When I took this, it was size of those giant lily pads which fascinated me.

View from an old churchyard across Loch Leven to the Castle where they incarcerated Mary, Queen of Scots.
Despite escaping, from what was considered a secure prison, things did not go well and she ended up a prisoner again, this time of Elizabeth of England who had her Royal cousin beheaded.
Mary's son went on to become King James V1 of Scotland and James 1 of England, inheriting both crowns.
It all seems so sad, tragic and long ago, but sadly power struggles still continue to this day all over the world.
