The impressive Matrimandir at the centre of Auroville as seen from the visitors' viewing point.

Under construction since 1971/72, the Matrimandir is a place to concentrate and find one's consciousness and is seen as the soul of Auroville.

The main structure was completed recently in 2008 while work on the gardens and grounds and water bodies remain ongoing for many years to come. The gardens are seen as important as the globe itself.

To actually enter the Matrimandir requires a getting timeslot several days ahead and is not open to regular and day-tourists.

Auroville is a "universal city in the make in south-India, dedicated to human unity, and based on the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother."
