San Francisco Moonrise

I tried to frame this picture with the Golden Gate Bridge in the foreground and showcase the Bay Bridge in the background. With the new lighting system on the Bay Bridge, the ugly sister is suddenly getting a lot of much deserved attention.

Last month's full moon only appeared for a few minutes as it transitioned from low-lying fog to a low level cloud system.

It's been way to long since I've had the opportunity to travel to a truly dark area and capture a good star trail. While difficult, I've known and experimented with the idea of "urban star trails" for a couple years now. The problems with city star trails are numerous. There's light pollution, fog, people, and location problems to name a few. And, Since the foreground is lit there's the very legitimate concern of overexposure.

I took 272 twenty second exposures for this image but ended up deleting the first 90 after a rogue wave slapped my tripod and knocked everything off-kilter just enough to be irritating.

An unusually clear San Francisco morning allowed me and a group of friends to capture the full moon resting on top of the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge.

After photographing Endeavour's final launch last year from Cape Canaveral, it was pretty special to see her fly by the San Francisco Bay Area on the final leg of a very long journey.

I finally took the time to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. It's loud, windy, cold, and totally worth it. It's very difficult to not take a photo that hasn't been taken by everyone else but that didn't stop me from trying. I leaned over the edge (a little) placed the camera between 4 suspension cables and shot straight up.

Despite hours of planning, the notorious San Francisco fog canceled any chance of photographing a full moon this month. So, I dug this out of the scrap pile as a consolation prize.

It's rare to see the sun set all the way to the horizon when looking through the Golden Gate. The famous (or infamous) fog usually eats up the sun long before it reaches the deck.

Even more rare is to catch a "green flash" on the upper limb of the sun. While green is not the last color in the visible light spectrum, the shorter blues and violets tend to be filtered out and scattered by the atmosphere. This phenomenon is known as an "inferior-mirage flash" or a "mock-mirage flash." Regardless of which type it is, they only last 1-2 seconds and are generally not seen by the naked eye.

The strawberry moon poses for a shot while rising over San Francisco. This month's full moon was a bit odd in timing. Normally, the full moon rise occurs within minutes of sunset but this month the moonrise was a full 30 minutes prior to sunset which left the moon lighter than normal and left the city more exposed.

Just hanging out in the Marin Headlands waiting for the moon to rise over the TransAmerica Pyramid. I was hoping for a "kiss" but I'm still happy with the results.

April's full moon sets over the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. Moments after this shot, the moon slipped into the ever present marine layer and faded away before reaching the horizon. The iconic Alcatraz Prison is on the right.
