Wendy Wilson, Wilson Phillips at the Saban Theatre, 4 May 2013

InSapphoWeTrust posted a photo:

On 4 May 2013, Wilson Phillips put on a great show at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. And the rather liberal photography policy (only flash was prohibited) meant I could bring in my Nikon DSLR and shoot away.

Wilson Phillips is one of the most successful female vocal groups of all time; their self-titled debut album had sold over ten million copies worldwide when released in 1990. The trio is made up of Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson, who are daughters of Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, and childhood friend Chynna Phillips, the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. The pedigree of these three ladies was one reason why they had proved so successful.

Wilson Phillips broke up only a few years after the 1990 debut, but has since regrouped and released new material.

A good look at the youngest member of the trio, Wendy Wilson. Wendy has always been my favorite member of the trio, and back in Wilson Phillips' heyday, Wendy was my pop music crush second only to Mariah Carey.

A look at Chynna Phillips as the trio performs an Elton John cover, "Daniel." Chynna was the "pretty one" of the three but she seems to have aged the fastest - on the other hand, she is still the energetic extrovert.

Wilson Phillips at the Saban Theatre, 4 May 2013

Chynna Phillips belts out her parents' big hit, "California Dreamin'," as Wendy Wilson waits for her part.

A good look at the youngest member of the trio, Wendy Wilson, while the trio performs "Release Me" from the 1990 debut album. Wendy has always been my favorite member of the trio, and back in Wilson Phillips' heyday, Wendy was my pop music crush second only to Mariah Carey.

Dari Project West Coast Premiere, 10 May 2013

InSapphoWeTrust posted a photo:

I swung by the West Coast premiere of the Dari Project, which had originated in 2005 in New York City to document the lives of LGBTQ persons of Korean ancestry. The initial Dari Project, after years of hiccups, resulted in a bilingual book, which was released on 2 May 2013 in New York City.

This event was held at Asian-Pacific AIDS Intervention Team (APAIT) in Los Angeles, and was well attended by LGBTs and allies of many different Asian ethnicities.

Books, donation jar, and Dari Project's postcards. Also visible are bumper stickers - of Taegeukki (South Korea's national flag) with the LGBT rainbow treatment! A normal Taegeukki has a white background, which signifies "purity" - as in the purity of the Korean blood, which is a key concept of the Korean culture, and one I am not a fan of - so I'm happy to see this variation. Nevertheless I refused to help myself to one, since while most Korean-Americans associate Taegeukki with Korean traditional culture and history, I instead associate it like most non-Koreans do, with the fascist, homophobic South Korean government, and putting the LGBT rainbow background on a Taegeukki is no different than putting lipsticks on a pig.

From left to right: Marsha Aizumi, Carol Mannion, and Minsook Brady.

Asians and Asian-Americans are taught to suck it up and hide their "shame" (including having an LGBT family member), one reason why so few of them are found in Parents & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) organizations. These three mothers are breaking that trend, and I am forever grateful.

Aizumi is the granddaughter of Japanese immigrants, and has been a fierce advocate for her oldest child, adopted from Japan in 1988, who came out as transgender several years ago. Aizumi and her transgender son recently wrote a memoir of their experience, titled Two Spirits, One Heart.

Mannion, immigrant from the Philippines, heads the initial San Gabriel Valley chapter of Asian/Pacific Islander American PFLAG (API-PFLAG).

Brady is a Korean immigrant married to a Korean adoptee (hence taking his Anglo surname), whose son came out as gay in 2009, and whose search to find acceptance for her son against Korean-Americans' rampant homophobia led to her extensive involvement in PFLAG (and helping form API-PFLAG, even adding a Korean-language PFLAG meeting).

API-PFLAG is expanding to New York City, to be headed by Clara Yoon, who helped out with the Dari Project, and who is the mother of a transgender teen.

Mark Ro Beyersdorf, a Dari Project staffer visiting from New York City, gives a talk about the Dari Project. After this event, he joined a dozen Korean-American lesbians and yours truly for two hours of karaoke.

This event was held at Asian-Pacific AIDS Intervention Team (APAIT) in Los Angeles, and was well attended by LGBTs and allies of many different Asian ethnicities.

Hyun Lee, visiting from New York City for this event, talks about the genesis of the Dari Project. In short, back in 1996, four gay men of Korean ancestry had been badly gaybashed by a large mob in Manhattan's Koreatown, and activists wanted to have progressive Korean-American organizations stand up for the most vulnerable in their community, including LGBTs. Even progressive Korean-Americans were reluctant to help at first, considering that being associated with a gay friend or family member was a kiss of death, in Confucian, classist Korean mindset (indeed, "guilty by association" is the basis for North Korea's criminal system); it was simply to be understood that there were no gay Koreans or gay Korean-Americans, period. Continued efforts to make LGBT issues less taboo have started to pay off in recent years, hence the completion of the initial Dari Project book and the continuation of collecting stories.

Although I was not aware of this particular gaybashing incident, I did live in New York City in 1996 as a college student, and do remember Korean-American students as being the most vocally evangelical and homophobic.

Minsook Brady gives a short speech about the need for acceptance of LGBT family members. When her 31-year-old son came out as gay in 2009, she needed a support network to deal with her various fears, and she eventually found Parents & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), but found that the standard, overwhelmingly white and English-speaking PFLAG was not going to adequately address the needs of Asian-American parents of gay children. She worked together with a few other courageous Asian-American parents to form API-PFLAG, specifically covering Asian-Americans, and including language-specific PFLAG meetings.

A good look at the youngest member of the trio, Wendy Wilson, while the trio performs "Next to You" from the 1990 debut album. Wendy has always been my favorite member of the trio, and back in Wilson Phillips' heyday, Wendy was my pop music crush second only to Mariah Carey.
