99% of the time they do this though with you at well over 100m distance, offering hardly any photo ops, this one was not that shy, luckily....

a.k.a. Common Merganser. Rare and very shy winter visitors. I've been trying to get decent captures for quite some time. Light was terrible that day, hence the awkward camera settings. Female close up in flight in 2nd comment.

I was both baffled & elated to find some rare Goosanders (a.k.a. common Mergansers) taking up quarters so close to my home.

Even as these shy ducks fled, this female sailed past really close. Luckily I found another female merganser a bit later, swimming among some mallards and coots, will post that one next week (-;

This great white egret was very deft at catching fish, managing to capture two large fish in the 5 minutes or so I was watching him.

Normally I'm not so lucky, usually the birds I observe hardly ever catch anything decent (-;
