For the second year running Rosie has been resident in my garden since the beginning of the winter. She is again busy building a nest in a Fir Tree just outside my backdoor. During the last month she has been wooed by Rodney who likes to sit in an Apple Tree puffing out his large red breast. Rodney featured in one of my photos some time ago eating a rather large apple. During this time I have managed to capture a few photos of both birds which I will be posting on Flickr along with any new ones and hopefully the happy day when the baby Robins fledge.

A regular visitor to my garden Starlings who are smaller than blackbirds have a short tail, pointed head and triangular wings. They look black at a distance but when seen closer they are very glossy with a sheen of purples and greens. Their flight is fast and direct and they walk and run confidently on the ground. Noisy and gregarious, starlings spend a lot of the year in flocks. Still one of the commonest of garden birds, its decline elsewhere makes it a Red List species.
The are conspicuous and widespread in the UK, occurring everywhere except for the highest parts of the Scottish Highlands. They are most abundant in southern England and are more thinly distributed in upland areas with moorland. Still one of the UK's commonest garden birds. Huge roosts are found in plantations, reed beds and city centres.

Best seen in Black

Water birds such as lapwings, plovers, godwits and curlews undertake long distance migrations from breeding grounds as far north as the Arctic to wintering areas as far away as South Africa.

Many congregate in huge numbers in only a few sites making those areas critical to the birds' survival, according to Wetlands International which drew up the newly-launched atlas of key sites for waders. While species and their habitats are protected in Europe, there needs to be better protection of key wetlands along the migration routes of the birds.

Coastal regions provide a magnificent habitat for thousands of birds, not just wildfowl and waders, though those totally dominate proceedings numerically. Among the waders are the Avocet which feeds mainly on aquatic invertebrates caught by sweeping the curved 8cm bill from side to side is one of the great success stories in British conservation.

The curlew is the largest European wading bird, instantly recognisable on winter estuaries or summer moors by its long, down curved bill, brown upper parts, long legs and evocative call. Ringed Plovers are fairly common ground nesters, having increased by 20 per cent from 1970 to 1985, partly because with better management of coastal sites they can have up to three broods in favourable years.

The Dunlin is a bird of medium conservation concern which nests mostly further north in Europe though up to 30,000 pairs can be found here in the breeding season. Their plumage at this time of year is delightful. In winter Dunlin form huge flocks, with more than half a million arriving, and when taking off in bulk they can produce spectacular aerobatic displays.

Black-tailed Godwits breed in significant numbers in the Netherlands, anything up to 100,000 pairs though declining. In Britain they average about 50 pairs each year, often in the Ouse Washes, where the tendency for summer floods can cause major failures.

Artic Terns can be found on many off shore Islands including the Farne Islands where I captured this photograph

With its long tail streamers and general shape the Arctic Tern deserves the local name of 'sea swallow'. Appearing white with a black cap, it is largely coastal although it can be seen inland on migration. It depends on a healthy marine environment and some colonies have been affected by fish shortages. Arctic terns are the ultimate long distance migrants - summer visitors to the UK and winter visitors to the Antarctic.

Rosie has been resident in my garden since the beginning of the winter. She is now busy building a nest in a Fir Tree just outside my backdoor.

Woody is another regular visitor to my garden.

The Woodpigeon is the UK's largest and commonest pigeon, it is largely grey with a white neck patch and white wing patches, clearly visible in flight. Although shy in the countryside it can be tame and approachable in towns and cities. Its cooing call is a familiar sound in woodlands as is the loud clatter of its wings when it flies away. Found across the UK in fields and woods, and also in towns and cities where they frequent parks and gardens. Juvenile birds are browner and duller and lack the white patch on the neck. They can be confused with the smaller Stock Dove.

Although known as a black-headed Gull they are more chocolate-brown - in fact, for much of the year, it has a white head. It is most definitely not a 'seagull' and is found commonly almost anywhere inland. Black-headed gulls are sociable, quarrelsome, noisy birds, usually seen in small groups or flocks, often gathering into larger parties where there is plenty of food, or when they are roosting.

Bonnie who is a frequent visitor to my garden often sits on a spare chair at the Patio Table.

Blackbirds are one of the commonest UK birds, its mellow song is also a favourite.
The males live up to their name but, confusingly, females are brown often with spots and streaks on their breasts. The bright orange-yellow beak and eye-ring make adult male blackbirds one of the most striking garden birds.
They are found all year round everywhere in gardens and the countryside and from coasts to hills, although not on the highest peaks.

Well worth a look in Lightbox

Rosie has been resident in my garden since the beginning of the winter. She is now busy building a nest in a Fir Tree just outside my backdoor.

Scruffy a regular visitor to my patio is a loveable Blue Tit who is quite happy to eat from your hand.

Blue Tits are often one of the most frequent visitors to the bird garden. As they are such a common sight, they can often be overlooked, but look closely and you’ll see a beautifully colourful bird with its bold blue cap, yellow belly and green and blue back. These incredibly agile birds are rewarding to watch and as they are very adaptable, they are usually the quickest to exploit any new food source, quickly learning to use any new feeder. They are so opportunistic that in some areas Blue Tits even learnt to pierce milk bottle tops for the cream!
Blue tits will nest in any small holes making them common occupants of nest boxes. The nest can be constructed from all manner of material and they will readily utilise wool and downy material put out for them. Blue tits lay large clutches of eggs, typically 10-12, but up to 16 have been recorded. The red-speckled white eggs laid from around mid-April are incubated for 13-15 days. The young fledge after around 16-22 days.
Insects, caterpillars, seeds and nuts are common foods of this acrobatic tit. They will also take advantage of fruit and even take nectar from garden plants. With their incredible agility and ability to learn from others they are quick to exploit new food sources, making them a common and often bold visitor to bird feeders.
Loveable

This gorgeous Blue Tit is another of my garden birds. He was born this year and is still producing his full colours so looks really loveable but a tad scruffy.
