I came across several logs while hiking in Allegheny County NC about a mile south of the Blue Ridge Parkway that appeared to have been scratched out. Black bears will scratch out logs in search of termites and other insects.

The Little Lonely Grave

In the winter of 1911 a small group of Uwharrie settlers planned to build a church on Long Mountain near the Poison Fork (river). That December little Diana Woodell (1901-1911) passed away and was laid to rest on the site of what was to be the future graveyard. Unfortunately, the community came under hard times and the church was never built. Diana’s family eventually moved away as did most of the community leaving little Diana alone on the south slope of Long Mountain. To this day the locals and the few who know of this location protect this site and try to keep flowers on the stone. Yesterday, I spread the ashes of Jack the LumixLab at this site. He was my best friend and a gentle giant of a lab. He loved all people, especially children. During our walks in this area he loved to swim in the creeks, run through the leaves, and watch all the different wildlife. I’d like to believe that now he and Diana will never be alone and will always have each other to run and play through the forest.

My first hike since Jack's death. I realized today I haven't hiked without him in nine years. It was very lonely without the Lumixlab running around. Wonderful to be back in the woods but it will take some getting use to.
