A Red Fox in Algonquin Park licks his chops hoping for a tasty morsel to be tossed his way. It wasn't, of course, because you should never feed wildlife but that didn't stop him from hoping :o)

A frozen pond in Algonquin Provincial Park. I looked up and noticed the interesting pattern the planes flying overhead had left and took this shot. Afterward, as I was processing it I noticed the bear paw print in the sky. Do you see it? :D

Canadian Bull Moose

Another glorious weekend spent hiking and photographing deep within Algonquin Provincial Park. This time, the trip yielded a sighting of three different moose one of which was this big fella.

While preparing to leave the park after a full day of exploring there, I'd spotted a cow and bull by the side of the road - easy to do when you see a pile of cars pulled over and a group of people with cameras aimed in a particular direction. I joined them and had a great time excitedly talking to complete strangers about the wonders of nature even if the moose had disappeared into the thick forest by the time I got to the site. I snapped a few photos of the bull peering out of the woods at us anyway and after checking out the other nature enthusiasts' photos and trading stories, I left feeling happy to have had the brief glimpse of one of Canada's most famous creatures and also a feeling of wanting to see more.

I drove away prepared to make the long drive home but on a hunch, I turned around at the East Gate and decided to take one last look along the highway for my giant friends and was rewarded when I spotted this big boy grazing in a marsh not far from where I'd seen the first two.

I must confess, I did what you should NOT do and got out of my car to take this and a series of other shots and I must say, I was pretty nervous doing so. "Anything for the shot" I kept telling myself but I sure didn't like the knowledge that had he wanted to, this big guy could have crushed me like a bug in a moment. But life's about risks and I was pretty sure I'd be safe here so I took a risk and it paid off.

Shortly after I shot this photo, a large truck passed by and startled him so he headed for the protection of the forest and I was left, as always, with a feeling of wanting more. I'll be back Algonquin, oh yes, I'll be back.

Face To Fox

One of the most magical and unforgettable experiences of my life to date: encountering a wild fox in Algonquin Provincial Park and spending nearly 2 hours hiking and photographing with him. At one point, I was lying on my tummy snapping photos under his ever watchful gaze. Then with no encouragement or provocation from me, he approached me and laid in a similar pose a mere 2 feet away from me, face to fox. Pure magic.

Some of Algonquin Park's most famous inhabitants - Eastern Wolves.

Unfortunately, these ones were on display behind glass. Despite my attempts over the years, I have yet to encounter (from a safe distance, of course) these beauties in the wild but I hope to one day :o)

Had a wonderful time over the weekend at one of Ontario's (and indeed, one of Canada's) most incredible parks - Algonquin Provincial Park.

The sun was setting as I passed this (very dirty) window in the park's visitor centre. I saw my own reflection and thought it made a cool shot :o) And it reminded me of my theme song these days, Hedley's "Invincible":

Jack Frost left an incredible piece of art behind on the surface of this beaver pond along the Logging Museum Trail in Algonquin Provincial Park. I'm not sure if the beavers who made their home in the centre of the reeds appreciated it as much as I did though :o)

A wasp nest I discovered while out at Scout Camp. It was a gorgeous warm and sunny day in November but the inhabitants of this giant nest were nowhere to be seen, thankfully. :o)

Coming back to the land of the living. I've been really sick this past week so I haven't been on Flickr much. I'm looking forward to checking out all your photos as soon as I have the energy.

This Mallard was grooming himself after a swim in the freezing waters of the pond at my favourite bird feeding trail but paused long enough for me to grab this shot.

Every year countless of these majestic animals are injured and/or killed (not to mention countless humans) on Canadian roads due to collisions with vehicles. Because a Moose's eyes are located on the sides of its face, it cannot see vehicles coming at it in its blind spot head on. It's constantly moving its head from side to side in order to see around it.

I must caution you to never get out of your vehicle to get a closer look at these guys as they can be very unpredictable (especially during mating season which is now!) and if they choose to charge at you, the odds are very much against you. I did it to get these shots but it was taking a very big risk. Thankfully, luck was with me :o)
