Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Zaandijk in the municipality of Zaanstad in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It has a collection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses; the ca. 35 houses from all over the Zaanstreek were moved to the museum area in the 1970s. The Zaans Museum, established in 1994, is located in the Zaanse Schans. The Zaanse Schans is one of the popular tourist attractions of the region and an anchor point of ERIH, the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The neighbourhood attracts approximately 900,000 visitors every year.

Thanks to good acquisition and networking, my daughter managed to get a photography assignment for the both of us. The brand new Holiday Inn Express The Hague-Parliament hotel recently opened in The Hague. It’s located close to the famous Binnenhof. Three of our pictures can be admired there now. Among them the one you can see in the picture, on a wall of six meters long and two and a half meters high. The other two pictures can be found in the elevators of the hotel.

Between 1646 and 1696 paint windmill "De Kat" was built at its present site on the Kalverringdijk at the Zaanse Schans. In 1782 the mill was destroyed by fire but was rapidly rebuilt again. At the beginning of the 1900's the mill was demolished to the height of the platform. In May 1960 the eight-sided mill paint "The Hunter Dune" was taken from its former spot Owings to urban development and placed on top of the old store house of 'De Kat'. The mill is once again grinding raw materials to make pigments for paints in the traditional time-honored way and is widely believed to be the only mill of its kind.
