Tidung 5: house in the garden

I'd forgotten about these old photos, shot among the Tidung of ulu Segama in October 1997. The Tidung are a small-scale, farming-and-fishing people who live along the Segama River in northeast Sabah, East Malaysia, on the edge of the Tabin Wildlife Reserve. I was conducting consultancy fieldwork that time. The photos have kept their colours quite well, and a good thing too: I've never gone back.

Photo: film. Camera: no idea. This was shot before I got my Nikon FM2 so i must have used some kind of point-and-shoot. I have absolutely no memory of it!

Stereotypical image: anthropologist's backpack nosing through a field of hyacinths -- this was probably the Tabin River, a channel of the Segama and the major access route into the lower Segama region before the advent of roads.

Shoemaker at his den, Hong Kong Shoe Store, George Town, Penang, Malaysia, 7/7/12. This shop produces hand-crafted and custom-made shoes. It was one of the shops showcased in the Living Museum programme of the heritage festival. Jimmy Choo, superstar shoe designer (which is different from shoemaker) apprenticed here, among other places.

Photos from the Community Street Walkabout (Living Museum programme of this year's George Town Heritage Festival in Penang). I posted an announcement of this talk before it happened (here). Just haven't had time to upload the photos until now! The guide for the Walkabout was Eric Loh, a George Town resident. He took us around the streets where he grew up and shared some lovely childhood photos to illustrate his stories. He's holding up a photo of himself as a toddler; I think the playground no longer exists.

Living Museum site visit to Vincent Hair Salon, George Town Celebrations, Penang Heritage Festival, Malaysia, 6 July 2012. The woman in blue was the facilitator of the visit.

This is one of the few traditional men's-only hair salons left in George Town; the truncated board on top gives an idea of the low prices they continue to charge. Young hairdressers avoid working at an establishment like this: the pay is low, and there's no glitz and glamour. The oldest of the ladies has worked here for 40-50 years, but she hardly looks her age. When these women retire, the business will close.

If you look really closely, you can spot my reflection. But, having photographed at this salon before, I knew to keep out of view!

It's a traditional Chettiar recycling "house"; they do not do the actual recycling, but strip down parts for sale to businesses that do. I suppose it's something like a junkyard. I like how this worker (metal scrapper?) is methodically bringing order to chaos. George Town, Penang, Malaysia, 9/6/12.

The Indian kid is showing the Chinese kid "how we do it." From my rather dim memories, I seem to recall playing with 5 or 7 stones. You throw one up in the air, pick another from the ground before the one in the air lands on your hand (which side up, I can't recall), throw two up, do same, throw three up, do same, until you're able to throw and collect the whole lot. My classroom used to ring with the sounds of pebbles hitting and rolling on the floor. Apparently it's not so carefree anymore in some schools these days. How children choose sides... for teams, latrine duty, indentured servitude, etc. I think the chant that goes along with this is "la-la-li-tam-pung" (the children are supposed to "show their hands" at pung!) Children's Festival documentation, George Town, Penang, 2/6/12.

This shop makes traditional Chinese funerary products (paper-based models of houses, vehicles, and other worldly effects) that will be burnt at funerals as symbolic gifts to the deceased. It also makes other Taoist ritual-related products, such as effigies for the Hungry Ghost Festival. The models are made from scratch and assembled by hand. I strolled around the neighbourhood yesterday morning. Knowing I'm just days from leaving here, I tried to regain a sense of wonder, to see the familiar with new eyes. Shugakuin became not the neighbourhood I've been at for six months but a series of disjointed images.

With the wide angle, the morning sun casting its long shadows, and the buses zipping past, this part of Kitayama-dori looks like a completely different place. Wider, longer, more like an endless boulevard and less like the crowded neighbourhood thoroughfare I know. Even the buildings look different.
