There is no active colliery any more in Essen / Ruhrgebiet. This monument honours the pitmen who guaranteed the wealth of the region (and of the country) for many decades.

In Witten they like their transformer stations colourfully decorated! By the way: Notice the old logo of the Federal Railway System in the background. They introduced a new version in 1994.
