Point Bonita

Point Bonita extends into the outer northern access to the Golden Gate Strait. A lighthouse is located at the tip of the promontory overlooking this vital waterway. The surrounding cliffs to the north are honeycombed with bunkers and military fortifications, all now abandoned.

This image was taken with an Olympus OM-1 film camera, the Sigma Zoom lens set at 28mm, using Kodak Portra 400 negative film. It was scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050 and digitally rendered with multiple Photoshop operations

Marin Headlands Bunker

The heights of Marin Headlands overlooking the strategic Golden Gate Strait are lined with fortified gun emplacements and military bunkers. The canons are now gone but the concrete bunkers will remain as a testament of past military presence well into the future.

Ring Mountain Wildfire

When hiking in the Ring Mountain Open Space Preserve recently I observed a crew directed by Marin Park Rangers fencing in a posted area that had recently experienced a wildfire. The Open Space Districts are patrolled and maintained by these rangers for the benefit of the public. In this case, the burned area is being fenced-in until 2013 to help it recover to it's natural state.

This collage was created with a selection of images taken by a Yashica D TLR and an Olympus OM1 film camera. The film negatives were scanned with an HP Scanjet G4050 and arranged into a collage using multiple operations in Photoshop.

The idea of "Open Space" areas in or near communities in Marin, California is meant to protect the environment and watershed as well as provide an area for the residents to enjoy in it's natural form. Pictured is such a preserve in the heights of Tiburon Peninsula.

Lounging in the corridors of the Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville, California I ran across these very strange creatures.
The Wine Country agricultural zone is always on the lookout for pests that can harm the vines. The Gigantic Camel Slug (Limax Camelus Gigantea) appears to have been introduced to the Valley by sculptor, Bene Bufano. Of course, they have a insatiable appetite for grapes!

This sculpture by Bene Bufano is displayed at the Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville, California. The Modavi Winery grounds are full of beautiful works of art, many of them by Bufano.

Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco, California, is one of the two oldest Jewish congregations in California. During the Gold Rush in 1849, a small group of Jews held the first High Holy Days services on the west coast of the United States in San Francisco. This group of traders and merchants founded Congregation Emanu-El sometime in 1850, and its charter was issued in April, 1851. The 16 signatories were mostly Jews from Bavaria. Source: Wikipedia

From atop Hawk Hill in the Marin Headlands of Golden Gate National Seashore is a spectacular vista of the Golden Gate Strait and San Francisco. Typically, this view is obscured by fog and mist - I was very fortunate to have clear weather for this shot.

This diminutive elephant appears to be tethered so that it can not graze beyond a certain radius. No wonder it is so small!

Beniamino Benvenuto Bufano (October 15, 1890 - August 18, 1970) was a California-based Italian American sculptor, best known for his large-scale monuments, usually of granite. His modernist work often featured smoothly rounded animals and relatively simple shapes.
"Bene" Bufano, as his friends referred to him, though this soon morphed into the Americanized, "Bennie" in the hands of the press, first came to San Francisco to work on a sculpture for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Afterwards, he traveled extensively before returning to settle permanently in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Considered an outspoken radical at the time, Bufano chopped off his trigger finger and sent it to President Woodrow Wilson at the onset of World War I as a protest against the war. In addition to his work as a sculptor, he taught at the San Francisco Institute of Art (but was dismissed in 1923 because he was considered too modern), the University of California, Berkeley, and Oakland's California College of Arts and Crafts.
