Front entrance of the campus of Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana. RML is perhaps best known for its research into vector-borne diseases, such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Q fever, and Lyme disease—three illnesses caused by microbes whose formal names pay tribute to the RML scientists who discovered them. Since 1928, when the landmark facility was constructed—and two decades before that when its scientists worked out of makeshift cabins and tents—RML has played a key role in our nation's health and well-being by focusing its talent and resources on the infectious disease threats of the day. In 1901 Congress appropriated funds for a new building for the Hygienic Laboratory and provided a five-acre site on the old Naval Observatory grounds at 25th and E Streets, N.W, in Washington, DC. The building was completed in 1904 but soon proved too small for the quickly expanding laboratory. By the time the research laboratories began the move to their present site in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1938, a south wing and two additional buildings had been added.
