Imagine an eleven year old tomboy with long stringy blonde hair and in her dirty bluejeans and scuffy cowboy boots pretending she is the heroine Karana in her favorite childhood book, Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. These rocks were her island.

Based on the true story of Juana Maria, a Nicoleño Indian left alone for 18 years on San Nicolas Island, off the California coast in the 19th century. Every little girl should read it.

Spent the last few nights in the new cabin that was built after the family home burned down in the Cedar fires 10 years ago. My first overnight.

Fun to drive up and be greeted by a few wild turkeys wandering around the property. The house is different, even the orientation is slightly more to the west but the familiar scents of live oak, pines, iris and grasses flooded in as did the absolute quiet. A few scrub jays and a noisy woodpecker broke the silence. Once night fell, only crickets filled the void and the stars were amazing.

Home....even now.

Most times when I wanted to get to shore, I would dive in and swim. Occassionally I would row if a hike looked promising and this was the little skiff that kept me fairly dry!

Evening begins somewhere in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand.

I do love to shoot at Windansea....it's a favorite place for area photographers and their clients. Always fun to see who arrives.
This young Navy pilot's bride sported white cowboy boots under her dress! I had to take a few shots.....:-)
