I've been mixing HDR and strobes to get these very commercial and nicely lit images. Being able to use blending and Photomatix allows me to shoot at any time of the day or night and have more control over the final result. Clients appear to like it so far. They're a little boring though. I need to step it up. Ideas welcomed.

We finally got some rain and with it, a sunset of color. The color was so strong that it looked like over-saturated HDR in the camer's display so this is actually toned down. 32-bit HDR created in Photomatix and processed in ACR and detailed in Photoshop. Thanks for looking.

This really isn't my kind of shot but I thought it would be fun to show the homes on that bluff. The real estate sales sign made me take the picture, it reads: "Second homes starting at 1.2 Million Dollars"

OK, this image sucks...I really only like one thing about it; it's a 32-bit HDR image with no chromatic aberrations and very little processing. I moved a couple sliders in Adobe Camera Raw and that's it...easy peasy ans super clean. I'm just so happy with this new way of tone-mapping. Now I have to get out of town and find something worth taking a picture of.

We had a beautiful sunset in Los angeles last night. This was created from a 32-bit HDR image processed in Adobe Camera RAW. The foreground was brightened much more than the top of the image so a small difference in tones became a problem. To remedy this problem, I created a custom gradient map to tie it all together. If you want to know how I added detail to the rocks, click on the image of the LA King below and read the instructions for "Freaky Awesome Details."

I finally had a chance to try a landscape 32-bit Photomatix HDR image processed in A.C.R. and I'm blown away. When I opened the image I really thought it was a mistake. It looked like a photograph, like a perfectly exposed photograph that I can treat as such. Once this method becomes widely used, we won't have to see anymore halos, fuzzy pixels, black clouds or noise. I hope and think that the acronym will no longer be used but rather become the norm.

This is processed with a few A.C.R. adjustments, color correction in curves and selective F.A.D. (freaky awesome detail.)

After taking this, I had to walk the shoreline for about 1/2 a mile before I get to my 200 yard high, vertical goat trail. The rocks are large, wet and sharp. You have to concentrate or you will get hurt very quickly. There is little chance of being found for days and mobile service is terrible. With my head down and eyes three steps ahead of me, I heard a bubbling noise followed by a presence. I looked to the water three yards to my right and bubbles were slowly followed by a head coming through the surface. Stopped in my tracks I had to watch in disbelief. A man in a wet-suit with a spear gun slowly came out of the water. As he stepped onto dry land he took off his mask, put down his 4 foot gun and said, "did you catch a good sunset?"
I responded; I think so, did you get the bad guys?" We both smiled and I walked away. I'll never forget that surreal moment.

Dentist Office

I really need a new dentist, this place makes me feel uncomfortable for some reason. -
Linda Vista Hospital (this hospital is over 100 years old has been closed since the 80s. Since closing it's been rented as a set for many movies, TV shows and photo shoots. Linda Vista is finally scheduled for demolition in 2013. A new federally subsidized, low income housing project for seniors will be erected in it's place. The people of Boyle Heights are unhappy about it because like many low income neighborhoods in America, they are the dumping ground for these projects. The property owners get their new business partially funded for free and within a short time, their will be another under-staffed, under-developed, under-maintained eyesore in the area.) If you have a chance to walk through and take some pictures before it closes, it's well worth the time.

I was late to the party and the missed the really bright and vibrant colors. The window was closing so and I knew 40 other photographers already captured this once a year sunset. To set my shot apart from the rest I set m camera to timer mode and ran toward it to make these footprints.
There's a little photomatix and heavy dodging and burning in this too....just on the sand.

With the anticipation of a post-rain sunset, I hiked down to my favorite spot in Palos Verdes. The sunset came and went with no color. 22 minutes later I was in traffic when I noticed a red glow coming from the beach. I actually thought it was a giant fire. I drove as fast as I could, parked illegally and ran to the beach to find this. The best sunset of the year....so far.
No filters....just my camera.

I haven't really been able to get out and shoot lately. The skies have been terribly dull and I really don't have a working wide angle lens. I saw some interesting light on this building in El Segundo so I pulled over to take this long exposure from the sidewalk. It took less than one minute for a security creep to run out and tell me to stop. Honestly, it's not worth arguing anymore, I completely ignored him.....it really pissed him off.

We haven't seen a colorful sunset over the ocean in weeks. All of the color has been about one mile inland so I had to do some traveling.... This is Los Virgenes Canyon and I'm not sure what mountain range this is.

Hey, big props to Flickr.....I was about to stop posting here but they really stepped it up a notch. I'm not sure if you can see it on a normal size monitor but on my 27" the images are HUGE and they load fast. It could be the best viewing experience out of all the S.M sites. Thanks to the Flickr employees. We don't care how many degrees you have. Now fix that awful "explore" function and everything will be right in the Flcikr world.

I created a massive, elaborate, vertorama, cityscape that took me 3 hours to process. When finished, I hated it so I deleted it. This is the only part I found remotely interesting in the end. I'm not really feeling it lately, very uninspired, I think I just need to get out of L.A. for a while.

Good little sunset tonight. I thought that I should post something because I have a feeling that we won't see any clouds for a long time. Believe it or not, I removed the color cast from this. You should have been there with me, everything was blue. I think the air itself was blue for a few minutes.

This is the inside of THIS cable car. It's a Los Angeles land mark called Angeles Flight< I was excited to ride it by myself for only fifty cents. I sat there alone for ten minute before a homeless man explained that it was broken. I gave him the fifty cents.
I'm not sure if this one is too busy...at first glance, it gives me a headache. When I blow it up and look at the detail, I like it...what do you think?
