Santa Anita Canyon Hipstamatic Water

A lush, wooded glen alongside the creek at the bottom of Big Santa Anita Canyon. The canyon is one of several that carve their way deep into the San Gabriel mountains, towering from one to two miles directly overhead. Filled with waterfalls, ferns, firs & pines, and a wide variety of wildlife -- including black bears, mountain lions, bobcats, mule deer, and bighorn sheep -- most people have no idea just how much wilderness is directly accessible to the L.A. area's eighteen million people. This particular spot is just thirty minutes from downtown Los Angeles.

Morro Bay smiley flags

Morro Bay is a natural embayment with an artificial harbor constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is the only all-weather small craft commercial and recreational harbor between Santa Barbara and Monterey. Morro Rock was originally surrounded by water, but the Army built a large artificial breakwater and road across the north end of the harbor, linking Morro Rock and the mainland. Some of the rock used for this and for the artificial breakwaters was quarried from Morro Rock itself. Other rock was imported by barge from Catalina Island. The bay extends inland and parallels the shore for a distance of about 6.4 km (4 miles) south of its entrance at Morro Rock. Morro Bay is recognized for protection by the California Bays and Estuaries Policy.

Los Angeles City Hall, completed 1928, is the center of the government of the city of Los Angeles, California, and houses the mayor's office and the meeting chambers and offices of the Los Angeles City Council. It is located in the Civic Center district of downtown Los Angeles in the city block bounded by Main, Temple, First, and Spring streets.

The building was designed by John Parkinson, John C. Austin, and Albert C. Martin, Sr., and was completed in 1928. Dedication ceremonies were held on April 26, 1928. It has 32 floors and, at 454 feet (138 m) high, is the tallest base-isolated structure in the world, having undergone a seismic retrofit from 1998 to 2001 so that the building will sustain minimal damage and remain functional after a magnitude 8.2 earthquake. The concrete in its tower was made with sand from each of California's 58 counties and water from its 21 historical missions. City Hall's distinctive tower was based on the purported shape of the Mausoleum of Mausolus, and shows the influence of the Los Angeles Public Library, completed soon before the structure was started. An image of City Hall has been on Los Angeles Police Department badges since 1940.

To keep the City's architecture harmonious, prior to the late 1950s the Charter of the City of Los Angeles did not permit any portion of any building other than a purely decorative tower to be more than 150 feet (46 m) high. Therefore, from its completion in 1928 until 1964, the City Hall was the tallest building in Los Angeles, and shared the skyline with only a few structures having decorative towers, including the Richfield Tower and the Eastern Columbia Building. City Hall has an observation deck, free to the public. The building was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1976. (source: Wikipedia)

Balboa Park Hipstamatic Sky [Explored]

Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre (490 ha) urban cultural park in San Diego, California. The park is named after the Spanish maritime explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa. It was the location of the 1915 Panama–California Exposition and 1935 California Pacific International Exposition which each created architectural landmarks for the park. The park's site was placed in reserve in 1835, and so is one of the oldest sites in the United States dedicated to public recreational use. In addition to open space areas, natural vegetation green belts, gardens and walking paths, it contains a variety of cultural attractions including many museums, several theaters, and the world famous San Diego Zoo.

This is the front façade of the Casa del Prado Theatre. The theatre and its adjacent Casa del Prado (also known as the Casa) are historic reconstructions of buildings from the 1915 Pan American Exposition. They are also the home to a number of youth arts organizations, the Park and Recreation dance program, and the San Diego Botanical Garden Foundation and library.

View of the harbor in front of the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco's northern Marina District, with San Francisco Bay and Marin County in the distance.

Fort Mason, once known as San Francisco Port of Embarkation, US Army, in San Francisco, California, is a former United States Army post located in the northern Marina District, alongside San Francisco Bay. Fort Mason served as an Army post for more than 100 years, initially as a coastal defense site and subsequently as a military port facility. During World War II, it handled most of the cargo for the Pacific campaign. Today it is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the site of several cultural facilities. It is a National Historic Landmark District with over 49 buildings of historic significance, spread over 1,200 acres (490 ha).

Morro Rock & Gull

Morro Rock is a 581-foot (177 m) volcanic plug located just offshore from Morro Bay, California, at the entrance to Morro Bay Harbor. A causeway connects it with the shore, effectively making it a tied island. The area surrounding the base of Morro Rock can be visited. The rock is protected as the Morro Rock State Preserve. Climbing on the rock or disturbing the bird life is forbidden by law. Several types of birds nest on Morro Rock, including three cormorant species and two gull species. It presently serves as a reserve for peregrine falcons, which are locally endangered and cause most of the laws that prohibit intervention with avian life. Sea lions and sea otters can be seen regularly in the water around the rock. Seals, however, are much more common in the nearby Morro Bay State Park, where they breed. Other fauna include a wide selection of tide pool animals, like hermit crabs, small fish, starfish, sea cucumbers, mussels, bivalve mollusks, coral, and more.

The Pinney House - Sierra Madre, CA

The Cultural Historic Landmark Pinney House was built as a 30-room hotel in 1887. It is one of the last remaining examples of the carriage trade hotels, serving those coming from the East to buy land during the land boom of Los Angeles in 1885-1888. Famed San Francisco Victorian architects, the Newsom Brothers designed the modest Queen Anne structure.

Judy and Greg Asbury bought the house in 2003. Since that time, they have dedicated their resources to refurbishing the house, keeping close to the spirit of a Victorian hotel. Today, the 10,000 sq ft “house” has six large Victorian bedroom and bath suites, a garden suite, a conservatory, a library, a parlor, a sitting room, a, sitting room/office, a formal dining room, farmhouse kitchen and a loft-like attic penthouse.
