Tim Andrews

Sol and I had the distinct pleasure of shooting Tim Andrews yesterday. He’s been battling Parkinson’s for the last 6 years. Which is what led him to start this project. If you watch the clips and read the article links below, he explains himself about the reasons behind this project better than I can, and gives you a great insight into the man himself.

His zest for life, passion for creativity and carpe diem attitude are wonderful to experience. Our few short hours with Tim left me with a great love for the man, his way of dealing with life and the problems it has presented him with.

As for the photo itself, I know many photographers concentrated on his illness, but I wanted to show Tim is more than just his disease. This shot is from some straightforward portraits that I did. I particularly liked this one because it shows so clearly the man I described above, not one ravaged by illness. There's some film I need to get developed too, so hopefully be back with something a little more... interesting.

HTAFC new away kit gets launched today. Shot under very challenging conditions, time and privacy being the main issue to keep it under wraps from prying eyes and flapping mouths.

Some 8 models in total, at a variety of mostly public locations all in one day and all pp'd the same day, so as to be ready to roll out as soon as they wanted.

Stranger#1 [in colour]

Finally plucked up courage to shoot my first genuine stranger.

I went to see the new £23 million Hepworth sculpture gallery in Wakefield.

I started speaking to David while looking out of one of the huge windows overlooking the river. He was joking that if I wanted to take pictures I should be a little more subtle. With the D3s replete with flash hanging from my side I was an easy spot for the many gallery staff that said "NO PHOTOGRAPHS".

We chatted for maybe an hour or more stood by this window, during which time I found out plenty of interesting things about David:

Originally lived and worked in Burnley until Rolls Royce shut up shop in the 70's which being the main employer in the area left him with no choice but to move to where he could find work. Between himself and his wife, they agreed whoever found work first, is where they would move to. His wife secured a job in Croydon. He's lived in the south ever since.

He retired 10 years ago

He volunteers as a curator at the Watts gallery in Guildford

He loves the arts and photography.

He made me aware of Sebastiao Salgado (AWESOME)

With his wife Barbara, he's travelled extensively to view collections as they were revealed up and down the country.

Before I knew it, one hour had turned into four, a cup of coffee together with his wife and a friend of his.

A chance meeting, great conversation and an afternoon well spent.

My first real foray into corporate portraits. Looking for feedback from anyone with XP doing this, particularly pointers on where to improve. I can see lots of niggly flaws which I need to resolve moving forward.

Any help much appreciated.

Could have done with a tripod and bracketing to do this properly. As it was the invigilator (surely a made up word) told me off for standing on the bench in order to take this from the centre of the wall. I guess they're not happy that for once, YSP have an artist who encourages interaction with their work rather than the usual "NO PHOTOS" response.

Alabaster Heads 2008 - 2010 - Jaume Plensa

Visited YSP for the first time in an age, mainly due to them taking almost a year to refresh the collection.

I was told by pretty much everyone that had gone that there was some incredible new work to be seen.

The star of the show (for me anyway) is undoubtedly this room of heads by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa. Carved from pure alabaster and lit from above, they absorb and emanate the same light magnified, taking on a real ethereal quality. They could almost be holographic projections as it seems impossible for something so solid to have this quality about it. They appear timeless, weightless, even magical.

It's the first time in my life I've walked into a room and stood agape with pure pleasure at the initial impact these had on me when I viewed them. I must've spent an hour with these heads alone.

Truly beautiful.

This picture fails completely to do them any justice, you need to experience them first hand.
