Somehow, this just summed up Las Vegas for me. Not exactly my favorite city, for a whole host of reasons, but this sign made me smile.

One of the kitty cats in the waiting room of the emergency vet clinic I was in tonight.

I should clarify for the people who have asked about Hilda; no, she's fine. I was there for a friend who thought his dog was dying. Thankfully, it just turned out to be an inner ear disease of some kind that produced stroke-like symptoms. His dog will most likely make a full recovery in a couple of days and is otherwise just fine.
Sorry if I worried anyone unduly and thank you again for your concern.

Even as I saw these two flowers, new and old, I was reminded that everything passes eventually. It was a reminder that I can endure the bad things, as they will eventually pass, but I should savor the good things, because they will eventually pass, too.

This was the line for registration at DEFCON. I got there, with my travel buddy, at 5:00am and we were in the first 500 to 1000 people registered for the convention. We got there so early because we wanted to make sure we got the "good" badges, not the photocopied ones. As it turns out, they had more than enough badges this year to make sure that all 15,000 attendees (estimated) had the "good" badges.

But, it was fun being one of the hardcore geeks there early.

So, last night when I came home from work, I saw that my laptop screen had gone dead. Not a problem, I thought, as this had happened before and was fixed by a quick reboot. Well, not this time. So, while I decide whether to repair this one, replace it with one from eBay so I can just swap had drives, or upgrade to a new one, I'll be mostly off-line. I may still make comments from my phone, but I'll be otherwise a little crippled. The external monitor gets me by, but not very well.

UPDATE: Well, not sure who really cares about this besides me, but the replacement parts for my tired, old laptop have been eBay-ed and will hopefully ship first thing Monday. So, if all goes well, I'll be able to upload more shots before the end of the week.

My dog, Hilda, eating potato chips. She's just like living with another bachelor roommate. Granted, one that has special needs and can't express feelings too well, but, hey, most women would say that describes virtually *all* men. And, let's be honest, the reason more guys are "dog people" is because dogs are more like guys than cats.

Also? Admit it. This is the most adorable thing you've seen all day, isn't it.

I lost this pen just under a year ago. Not a big deal, right? Well, this pen was given to me by my best friend on the occasion of his wedding, for being his Best Man, even though I never got to the wedding, since I was in the hospital trying very hard not to die of cancer or chemotherapy. I just found it in my car at lunch while looking for something else. The universe is a strange, strange place.
