Just taking a chance to look back at some images on the old hard drive that I've not got round to editing. I saw a few shots of the wreck recently so thought I'd see how much of a difference LR4 makes to the editing. In fairness to LR4 she really helps pull back an image and lighten one up more gently than I can in PS Elements.

This image was captured last January, 2012, on my first visit to the old wreck. I'd had to wait for the tide to go out and finally got to see her! Mind I hadn't realised how quick the tide would drop and almost felt I needed to top the water levels back up!

Allan England ~ Photography posted a photo:

Inspired hashtag title from the wonderful pipe less pipe supports on Blyth beach.

View On Black

These bad boys were added along with Blyth's new poo pipe a few weeks back, and I tried a composition to just focus on these boys against the sea and the sky.

I was gutted when I heard the old pipe had been replaced by a brand new red shinny one! At first I just thought about the good old pipe, and it wasn't until I saw the new pipe that I realised the full horror! Not only did they take away the old pipe, they've removed it's old wooden supports and replaced them with these newer posts! However, it wasn't until I got home that I remembered something else was missing!

In fact at low tide I'd seen some wooden posts broken and very low down in the sand! Now the horror hits home - they're used to be some additional wooden posts next to the old pipe and they've gone too!

So pi@@ed off by this modernisation! The only thing that brought a smile to my face was how the new pipe looks like a cock up! All measured up and then bugger we're a tad short lads! However, the reason for probably replacing the old pipe was that it leaked! How ironic that the new one can be left to then just pour into the sea!

Still it allowed me to play with the 10 stop and go for a minimal feel to this one! I'm delighted this image came out, as it was at this stage that my tripod had become a duo-pod! Yep I had to force the "additional" leg into the sand and then balance the tripod stumps on top!

"Would you help me stand, If I saw you in heaven?"

Allan England ~ Photography posted a photo:

Inspired title by a comment my eldest boy made when he saw this image, he said "It's like heaven!"

View On Black

So only one song a father can choose to have with that comment Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven".

I've often stood looking at these posts at St Mary's Island and wondered how I would like to capture them. Shortly after sunrise I tried my 50mm f1.8 Nikon lens to isolate the posts in the dropping tide and went with the 10 Stopper!

Eric Clapton ~ Tears In Heaven

"Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

I'll find my way
Through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven."

Allan England ~ Photography posted a photo:

Inspired by the co-ordinates for the Longniddry Shipwreck being 55°58′N 2°53′W and not the Hitchcock movie!

So I figured that it's about time I caught up on my processing and these images go back to July 2012! I really need to find a better way to manage my workloads as they say! But it's always nice to revisit previous road trips!

Well this was from a glorious night in East Lothian chasing the light and then being rewarded with a little slither of light on the horizon and some amazing blue moody skies!

Just me on a beach with my trusty camera and filters soaking up the light till the tide had gone out and I was left in the dark!

I read an article recently about how it's important to try different compositions of a subject and believe you me! Who's you me? Well I must have this wreck covered from every angle! So for today's enjoyment a portrait version and a landscape version! I like how the portrait version captures the twisting sky and how the landscape gives a feeling of openness if that's a word?!

PS I know the co-ordinates are more North then West but that hardly makes a punchy title! End of disclaimer!
One for my Seascape & Landscape followers, I guess my love for Light-Painting can only be equaled by my love of the sea!

I've had these shots waiting to be processed for a few weeks now, as I felt I needed a few more days just looking at them and seeing how they made me feel. Well they made me happy! Yep it was a grand morning on my own at the lighthouse, just dodging the big waves and trying to keep my filters clean!

Allan England ~ Photography posted a photo:

Inspired title from standing in the sea and looking at the beautiful beach huts on Blyth sea front in Northumberland.

View On Black

Now I raised quite a few funny looks the other night when I decided that I wanted to shoot the beach huts from in the sea! We had quite a lively tide too, the sea was on her way back out which at Blyth reveals these lovely pebbles. Once the tide drops further it's all golden sand (okay more a coal dusted sand!).

Blyth is not known for it's beauty as a town but for us photographers the beach is heavenly, there is a long concrete jetty, posts, pipes, piers and an assortment of odd folk walking on the sea front!

So as I set up to take this shot, I had to time my shot to the moment the waves rushed past me and broke on the beach and then started to claw back through the pebbles. In true "Dave Brightwell" tradition I made sure I had some foreground interest - piece of wood and then all I had to do was wait for the waves! For me Dave Brightwell is a master of composition and foreground interest - go check him out too!

Now can I say this was my first try! Success but not for me! I stopped for a further 30 minutes in the sea thinking I could get a different wave effect and also waiting for the sky to erupt into a beautiful sunset! I was soaked, I had my full waterproofs on but once the tide I had shot up my waterproofs the old wellies were sinking fast! And as you know I have the only waterproofs that make you wet on the inside and dry on the outside!

As I stood in the sea I also had to contend with dog walkers, dogs, "jackie sly waves" (the ones that sneak up on you) and the contrasting sky too!

However, I was talking with another tog who asked what I was doing! He didn't come in he just chatted from the shoreline, but he mentioned he had a film camera out with him but as he only had one shot on it he headed for the concrete jetty! Love to see how his shot turned out!

And then I saw a very startled photography walking along the beach! The very talented and brilliant
Paul Appleby! Well Paul's look said it all! I could tell he thought "he's lost his marbles!" "He's facing the wrong way!" But Paul being a true gentleman encouraged me on and then ran off down the beach!

However, can I just add Paul got a fantastic shot of the beach huts that night! In fact I have to say I love the image he made! In fact so much that I waiting last night for darkness and the rain to stop to try it! But the rain kept falling! Make sure to check out Paul's fab photostream!

Inspired by the lines from this rock that pointed straight at the sunrise down at Old Hartley.

View On Black

Just been working through some older images this is from a sunrise with Anita back in May! Now that I have Lightroom 4 and it is giving me a chance to process the images closer to the in camera file, feel that it balances the colours better. Still trial and error!

Had a fun night tonight - stood in the sea for nearly two hours trying to get the image I wanted and failed - going to try again at sunrise so watch this space for new works!

Bye for now!

Inspired title comes from this mornings mission to capture the sunrise over the back of St Mary's Island by the 1914 Rangefinder.

View On Black

Made Explore #7 2012 29th October 2012.

So as I'm on a weeks holiday I figured it would be easy pickings for me to grab the best spots as all the other togs would be heading to work this morning!

Once I'd checked the forecast last night and the tides I thought my best option would be at the rangefinder, seeing that low tide was at 9.30am with a 1 metre tide too. Sunrise was around 7am ish, so I best leave the house about 6ish! Now then at 6.30am I was struggling to get out of bed! But a quick dash and I merely skipped over the rocks to the back of the lighthouse - okay not so much skipping as slipping and sliding!

Once in position I soon realised that the massive bank of clouds to the right weren't going to help me, and I should have been in position about 30 minutes before this image!

But I tried and managed to bag this image on my second attempt, I was quite pleased with the results, I had hoped for more colour but it was a fairly flat sunrise due to the heavy clouds. Plus the outgoing tide made it difficult to keep the water swirling around the rangefinder!

However, I'm delighted to have gone out as I did see my first seal pup on the rocks! I've often read about folk spotting pups but I've only seen one seal nearby before in all my 43 years! So to spot one today was great, he/she was a bit of a distance from me and had sneaked up after I'd passed by.

If the sunrises keep going like this, I'm thinking of taking up seal spotting for a hobby!

Anyhow quick bit of history about the rangefinder - it was built c.1914 and used by the military during WW1 to "calculate their range!" and also it stopped them shooting left of here and blowing up the lighthouse! Incidentally, their is another one South of the Tyne at Souter - which Mick, Phil & Bryan dragged me too many moons ago and that walk nearly killed me off! The southern rangefinder is only accessible at low tide and is a very long trek! The Northern rangefinder is a much, much easier walk around the back of St Mary's Lighthouse!

Cheers!

Well, I had a nightmare with the chaps last weekend trying to balance the dark rocks with the bright sea, so after giving up with the Sigma 10-20mm I decided to have a play with the old Nikon 50mm.

View On Black

Made Explore #26 28th October 2012.

First time down on the rocks by Seaton Sluice harbour ( and probably my last!), I struggled all morning trying to find an interesting rock to balance the sea! Well made nowt work so once the sun came up there was a lovely misty bit of colour over by St Mary's, oh how I wished I'd gone there again. So using me 50mm prime I tried to get a nice LE of the sea and the lighthouse, well the sun was too bright and blowing out the sea and the sea was too flat to give motion to the shot!

So my latest "abstract landscape" is a combination of trial and effort and a bit of a fail! But I do like the contrast of the distant lighthouse with the "adapted" sea! Plus enjoyed playing with the old 50mm and trying some abstract landscapes!

Camera Nikon D80
Lens Nikon 50mm f/1.8
PS If you keep looking at it you can feel the sea moving!

PS If you keep looking at it you can feel the sea moving!

Inspired title from this weekend's big "derby" game between arch rivals Newcastle United & Sunderland Football Clubs!

View On Black

Well, I've been meaning to get out and shoot the sunrise down at Tynemouth Haven, home to Tynemouth's Sailing Club, and also a great view point of the two piers on either side of the River Tyne.

So when my alarm went off on Saturday morning I did have to drag myself down here, I'd noticed all week the sun was rising between the piers, so figured I'd have to try and capture it! Well it was a canny rise, but shortly after sunrise the sun was way too bright to get any enjoyment from, so after chatting with another tog who mentioned he was going to St Mary's Lighthouse I did the same!

But not before I had a few pre and post sunrise images, I've uploaded the two images to show you the difference in light from just a ten minute period! Now one draw back from the recent high tides was the amount of rubbish on this beach! It's such a shame as there are some amazing rocks, similar to some of the larger ones you see South of the Tyne!

However, I had to wait for the tide to drop a bit before I could include the foreground rocks as there was a thick layer of seaweed and rubbish - plastic bottles, margarine boxes, fish boxes and most types of plastic! Plus some amazing tree branches and logs!

Anyhow, back to the great divide! For those that don't know the pier on the left is the North Pier and home to Tynemouth and then North Shields. The pier to the right is the South Pier and home to South Shields! We like to keep things simple you see! Well folk from the North of the Tyne mostly follow Newcastle United and South of the River and further South you'll find Sunderland and then South of them Middlesbrough! The main football teams in the North East of England.

Well as if by magic the score in todays game was 1-1 so both sides can sleep easy and not lose face at work tomorrow!
Had a cracking weekend chasing the light and being with the family, met Phil, Ed, Simon & Paul today and caught another sunrise! So more images to process and share soon!

Anyhow got a trip to London this week and all ready thinking about a few locations on the way down and back! Hope you all had a good weekend and have a great week!

Inspired by some feedback from Outdoor Photography writer and contributor Pete Bridgwood!
View On Black

I recently got a fantastic twitter message from Pete suggesting that I try a square crop for one of my images from Blyth beach! So boosted by his great critique I decided to look at some of the other images from the shoot and tried a square crop!

The suggestion allowed me to get rid of the distractions in the corner of the image from the piers and thus created a clean and minimal image. I must admit I don't often do a square crop but it has given me a fresh idea and opened up another perspective!

For me Outdoor Photography Magazine is the one publication I must have, they are loads of exciting features about photographers and locations. Pete also has a regular section where he showcase's his work and how to achieve the image too! Overall a top bloke in my book!

Thank you Pete!

Inspired decision to go out chasing the darkness last night! Spotted this rock n roll train up at Lakeside Halt, Woodhorn, Northumberland.

View On Black

Well after a bracing walk with the family on the beach yesterday I was still feeling a tad restless and on edge; so 9pm came and I thought bugger it I'm heading out!

I packed all my light painting gear and I mean all of it! Dome maker, paint rolers x3, bike stand, lenser v24 x2, wire wool x lots!, magnesium x lots, torches, camera, cuddly toy (it's lonely out there!) and tripod! Oh and wellies and waterproofs oh and googles x2 and a pair of flashing glasses from Hong Kong! (Okay they were cheap - okay they do look crap but they were cheap!)

So off I headed needing to try out a few ideas and boy did I! I got home at around 3am feeling refreshed (yes it was windy and cold last night!) but more importantly I had crossed over to the darkside!

Anyhow I've had this image in mind for some time now, this is the old miniature railway up at Woodhorn Colliery, well it's now a tourist attraction, and this little platform had been crying out to me for some passengers! As I cannot spin Orb passengers I figured Dome passengers would do! I liked the light pollution coming over from the Alcan plant so I didn't alter any of the settings as the warm fire feel added to this being a track for a small steam engine!

I found it quite difficult walking up and down the narrow track lines but managed to stay upright to waft my way along!

Learning so much from light painting, as with the darkness it is so difficult to work out compositions and exposures. The key learnings are the importance of visualising your image in advance, understanding your light painting tools, then understanding the impact of all of the above on aperture, ISO and shutter speed!

I was really pleased with the composition here and with hindsight I would have liked to have maybe used a torch with a coloured filter to paint some of the track, but that's the beauty of light painting - to some extent it's like using film. You can't just take another exposure! You have a very slim chance of repeating all these actions exactly the same!

So onwards and upwards, I have also found a new missile for that fella from North Korea, I tried to create a Tacky Mask on the beach and well I'll save the rest for later!

Thanks again to all the light painters/junkies for continuing to inspire me and for all my seascape and landscape followers keep the faith I will one day cross back over to the light side from the dark side!

Have a great day!

If you go down to the back of my garden you're sure in for the surprise of your life!

View On Black

Yes, Friday night revellers could be heard saying " Wor lass I seen some hic, lights, hic, a did!" too which their sober partners replied "naa you didn't yer just pissed man!" to which he replied "I f@@kin' did! am telling ya I seen, hic, some, hic, f@@kin' lights!"

Well it added to the fun of trying out some new techniques with my array of light painting tools! I managed to break yet another Orb string! Just as I swung the best Orb of the night as well! Honest aaa tells ya man!

So been on t'internet this morning and ordered some speaker cable to create safer strings to spin! We're getting close on the orb front - well close means instead of slicing me Orbs I'm now snapping them! And who's this we again?!

Anyhow back to the fun and games of last nights practice session, I want to better understand what you can do with the old Lenser V24s and the old paint rollers ~ so now feel I have a better understanding of what you can use them for!

This image is created with my blue & red lenser V24s ~ just incase you couldn't be bothered to work out the colours for yourself (always caring for you I am!), I like these type of Orbs - well you can guess I've posted two! I've also painted a red Orb with the lenser which I may share somewhere!

Well, onwards an upwards as they say! Back to bloody work next week! Seems a strange week off I've had, been battling the tiredness and restlessness levels quite hard this week, not helped by being on anti-biotics which seem to dissagree with me! Anyhow less moaning and time for a late breakfast!

See you soon and enjoy the weekend! Oh and by the way big up to Jules for answering my late night flickr mails of frustration! Check out his cool stream!

Inspired night out light painting with young Luke Skywalker and Master Yoda down at Cullercoats caves. ( Aka Paul & Mick )

Jedi Master Mick had shown us chaps how to complete a Lenser V24 Orb, so this was maybe my 2nd attempt at trying out this new trick with Mick's lenser! Loving the reflections of the rock pool that I was standing in! These caves are quite small, most have been filled in due to H&S!!! So you have a small opening in most that allows you to work away.

This particular cave goes back the furthest but on this night the water level was higher than wellie level so couldn't explore this one further but must pay this place another visit soon! Now that I have become a lightpainting junkie!!

Please check out my latest Lenser V24 Orb - I have just managed to purchase two lensers unfortunately I wasn't able to get my hands on the multi coloured one but I'm happy with what I got!

Cheers!

Allan England ~ Photography posted a photo:

Inspired by the Champions League Penalty Shoot Out! And it's raining so hard I'm building my own arc - full of light painting tools in pairs!

View On Black

Well I'm sat there all "dome" alone when suddenly the power goes off and into the darkness steps two unknown creatures! A red monsterous creation and his small pal! Dome head! Yes these infamous light painting gods descended upon me to watch the Champions League semi final penalty shoot out last night between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid! And what a racket they made, screaming and shouting at the players!

Okay, so I made a few bits of that up but these two creations helped to keep the nerves intact through the advert breaks! I placed the Lenser V24 Orb behind the Dome as I'm finding I end up in the shot otherwise - is this because I'm shooting at close range to the dome? The dome appears quite bright and I tried a few different apertures but my shadow was illuminated by the glowing dome - so I then figured if I try a lenser Orb it will mask out my reflections.

Also as my V24 lenser's are just one colour ( I have a red one and a blue one - just incase you needed to know that!) how do I avoid the middle looking like lenser overkill? Look forward to lots of assistance from the light junkies out there!

PS with my lenser V24 being German we were Bayern fans last night! Wunderbar!
"belhaven bridge"

Allan England ~ Photography posted a photo:

Couldn't help but share another view of the magical little bridge up at Belhaven Bay in Scotland.

View On Black

This amazing structure allows walkers the chance to cross the bay when the tide is low, however, when the tide is high you have this rather abstract feel to the place with the bridge stuck in no mans land!

To the North of the bridge you can see the wonderful sight of Bass Rock another landscape photographers dream.

Enjoy the view.

Camera Nikon D80
