Acoustic Night with Pesawat & Bittersweet | 4th January 2011

Got the chance to see Pesawat & Bittersweet performing their first ever acoustic show in KLPAC, for free (yes, admission was free!).

I just brought along my camera, even though I didn't really feel like shooting any pictures. And I was thinking like, "hey, why don't I try shooting in black and white?"

Of course, I always shoot in RAW, so there's no problem of recovering the color version. But on that night I chose to shoot in RAW + jpeg so I can just upload all the jpegs to Facebook / Flickr directly without having to convert from the RAW.

Anyway, here's Bittersweet guitarist/band leader in all his glory :)

First photo from my 5-days road trip to southern part of South Korea :)

This photo is almost SOOC (straight out of camera); slightly cropped the edges to remove the vignetting from CPL filter & RAW converted to JPEG - all done in Canon DPP.

Taken at 17mm, f/8, 1/80s, ISO 200.

These are the burial mounds of the Silla kings located in Gyeongju, South Korea.

The early history of Gyeongju is closely tied to that of the Silla kingdom, of which it was the capital. Gyeongju first enters non-Korean records during the Samhan period in the early Common Era. It is recorded in Chinese records as Saro-guk, one of twelve petty states which comprised the Jinhan confederacy. Saro-guk would later become the Silla kingdom. Korean records, probably based on the dynastic chronicles of Silla, record that Saro-guk was established in 57 BCE, when six small villages in the Gyeongju area united under Bak Hyeokgose, the kingdom's first ruler. During the Silla period, the city was called "Seorabeol" (서라벌; 西羅伐), "Gyerim," or "Geumseong" (금성; 金成).

After the unification of the peninsula in the mid-7th century, Gyeongju became the center of Korean political and cultural life. The city was home to the Silla court, and the great majority of the kingdom's elite. Its prosperity became legendary, and was reported as far away as Egypt. The Samguk Yusa gives the city's population in this period as 119,000 households, suggesting that the total population exceeded one million. Many of Gyeongju's most famous sites date from this period, known as Unified Silla.

However, the city's prosperity proved short-lived. In the late ninth century the Silla kingdom declined and fell apart, giving way to the Later Three Kingdoms of Korea. In 927 Gyeongju was pillaged by Hubaekje, one of these later kingdoms. Shortly thereafter, King Gyeongsun surrendered his title and country to Taejo, who then established the Goryeo dynasty. Gyeongju was no longer the capital of a united Korea. Gaegyeong (modern-day Kaesong) assumed that title.

This is Putra Mosque in Putrajaya, Malaysia. It is located next to Perdana Putra which houses the Malaysian Prime Minister's office and man-made Putrajaya Lake. In front of the mosque is a large square with flagpoles flying Malaysian states' flags. - from Wikipedia.

I know there are too many distractions in the background but then we have limited time before moving on to the next place. I couldn't really wait for those people to move away so I just fire the shutter away (haha). But I do have another shots of this with less distracting background. I'll post them later :)

Cheomseongdae is the oldest surviving observatories in East Asia, and one of the oldest scientific installations on Earth. It dates to the 7th century to the time of kingdom of Silla, which had its capital in Gyeongju. Cheomseongdae was designated as the country's 31st national treasure on December 20, 1962.

Went to Dangjin (당진) on Sunday for a class project with my group mates. The class is so huge (400+ people) that almost everyone had to choose their group randomly (unless those who had friends who registered in the same class, of course).

So last Sunday was the first time everyone in the group went out together and even though we barely knew each other at first, it turned out to be a fun trip. I offered to be the group's photographer and so I am excused from writing project reports =P

Anyway, the girl in the photo is the most shy in the group, always hiding from my lens whenever I pointed the camera at her. But she's the cutest though! I'm happy she posed for this one shot :D

Will be posting more photos soon :)
