Hungry carnivorous 'Pitcher plants' (Nepenthes species) chow down on those pesky bugs while you enjoy the frequent fog banks produced by the 'Mee' mist system installed to keep these cloud forest plants happy.

Tropical Greenhouse

Usually ten degrees or more cooler than the outdoors on hot days, the Tropical Greenhouse is a great place to visit for some relief from the heat. Check out the orchids while you're there -they are some of the best looking of the 2 thousand plus varieties the Arboretum keeps in its extensive collection.

Oak Near Ayres Hall

This broadly spreading Coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) has always produced a nice amount of shade -but now it's shade is even more dense. About two years ago the sidewalks leading up to the tree and the bricks that were laid down underneath it were removed and the tree's own leaves allowed to pile up under it in order to minimize the impact that human activity was having on it; the result? A far denser canopy and a healthier tree.

California Pepper

Just north of Water Conservation Garden is this centuries old California pepper. It's knobby branches and flowing green foliage create a relaxed canopy that allows you to imagine being in California before the turn of the 20th century.

Tough not as cool as some of the water feature areas, the dense shade and the large space created by the ficus's thick canopies is quite refreshing.

The Bowl

Although there is some controversy as to whether this mysterious depression was a ceremonial pit for the local Tongva native Americans or a reservoir one thing's for sure -it's one of the most refreshing and spiritual places at the Arboretum.

Amaryllis Bed

As if to defy summer's withering heat Amaryllis belladonna bulbs are usually in full bloom in the hottest months of late August and early September. They are located in the shade of the Crepe myrtle trees (Lagerstroemia indica) that flank both sides of the area south of the African section and west of the Bauer lawn.

The Baldwin Casino, also refered to as the Queen Anne Cottage, can be viewed in relative cool from across the Baldwin Lagoon. If this looks vaguely familiar to you it should; it's been the site where 'Meet the Fockers' , 'Fantasy Island' and many other movies and TV shows have been filmed.

Oak in the Austrilan Section

If you have walked the 2 mile plus loop around the Arboretum during a heat wave you know that the Australian section can be quite hot and dry. Although there are no water features in this 20 acre plus collection of gums, mallees and wattles, there is shady live oak located just off the road that encircles this little piece of Oceania.

Meyburg Falls

This Artificial waterfall pumps out more than 50 thousand gallons of water an hour and has been the backdrop of many a rock video (one of the most recent being filmed by Beyonce'). The refreshing mist kicked up by the falls makes this one of the most visited spots in the Arboretum -especially during the summer.

Aquatic Plant Pond

This oasis on top of an otherwise dry hilltop is filled with flowering water lillies and lotus. A small waterfall on the southeast side produces a calming symphony of water notes.

Tropical Forest Lagoon View Bench

On the south side of the sag pond known as Baldwin Lagoon an area known as the 'Prehistoric Forest' is densely planted with various tropical trees, shrubs, flowers and bamboos. A favorite site for various movie and TV shoots that involve jungles, it's also a refreshing and cooling destination for visitors, especially during the summer months. The lake's temperature lowering effect and the shade produced by the lakeside foliage combine to make this one of the most 'cooling' locations here.
