When I saw a picture of the Nā Pali Coast for the first time, I just knew I had to go to Kaua'i in my lifetime.

This side of the island is inaccessible by automobile and can only be seen by air or boat. The Nā Pali Coast trail (one of the 10 most dangerous hikes in the world) does not reach this area shown, and stops about 0.7 miles north of here.

This was on one of those evenings where I knew I wanted to shoot a coastal scene, but I had to find the right spot where I could fully see the sun set (and take advantage of the few clouds out).

I had to drive a little further north than I had anticipated since it seems like the sun sets a little bit more to the north during this time of year...the things I've learned from this hobby :)

I tried a couple of different spots along the Pacific Coast Highway (it was a race against time) before I found a little pull-out that offered up this view...

I had never heard of Mono Lake until a couple of months ago through Flickr (although I had heard of the techno artist Monolake). I was blown away by what seemed like alien landscapes!

I then found out that it was on California's list of State Parks that they were planning on closing. So my New Year's Resolution was to visit Mono Lake before they closed it down.

I found out shortly thereafter that the Mono Lake Committee and the people around Mono Lake were able to successfully petition for the park to stay open!

With the semester not starting for another week, I decided to drive out there and fulfill my resolution.

It was awesome.
