Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge

Connecting the San Diego Convention Center and the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel to the Gaslamp Quarter and the East Village, I crossed this bridge in search of food many times at a recent conference held at the Hilton. In this image you can see the pylon, which juts out from the ground at a distinctive 60º angle, and the suspension cables connecting it to the deck of the bridge.

I ran two meetings for the photo club tonight: Photo 101, which is an introduction to the fundamentals of photography (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, along with focal length); and a photo challenge for more experienced members not in need of a refresher. at the end of the evening the two groups joined up to vote on the contest entries and award prizes.

I saw some new faces at the meeting, and one of them asked me a question I'd never heard before, so in all it was a great success.

symposium day is, for many, the climax of their engineering degree. after five-to-seven years of labs, illegible greek characters, work placements near and far, expensive textbooks, distance ed courses heinous and benign, and late nights, symposium day is the day that the senior project goes on display. eight months of research, design, and construction by the graduating class come together in a public thoroughfare to be put on display for grad students and faculty with grade sheets, family, friends, and passers-by.

many students are awake into the wee hours, putting the final touches on their prototypes and demonstrations. others are up at the crack of dawn to pick up their poster from the printer.

at the end of the day, voices will be hoarse, suits ruffled, fragile prototypes stressed to their limits, and celebration well-earned. and graduation will be that much closer.

congratulations to all of my friends who presented their hard work yesterday.

went out to capture "hints of industry around campus" for the Photo Club's contest this evening. had a great time shooting and was pleased to see some great photos from the other members.
