Watercolor in Moleskine painted at the South Street Seaport looking across the East River. Sketched with the NYC Urban Sketchers. The Watchtower is the magazine published by the Jehovah Witnesses and the building is owned by them. The sign was put on top of the building for self promotion around 50 years ago. It sits at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge.Trying something different.

WC in Moleskine. My town got 2 ft (61cm) of snow. The next town over got 3ft(91 cm) ... all from one storm. We are stranded in our homes. The roads are covered in 2" of solid ice, and there is no place to put the snow. Cars are stranded along the major highway. Tomorrow it is expected to get warm and rain. Much will melt and flood. I filled the bird feeder before the storm, since I knew my birds would have no food source. They were ravinous, and now , with so much snow, I can't reach the feeder to refill. Sketched in about 20 minutes from my back door.

WC sketch at night in Bohemia NY, about 40 minutes.
I have been working nonstop and yesterday was no different. While working, I had the radio on all day listening to the horrible tragedy in Conn, so when my friend Joan called to see if I wanted to sketch, I didn't hesitate to take a break. We were going to a place set up in a shopping center parking lot selling Christmas trees, but to our surprise, there was this horse and carriage, and Santa! I found out that these two work horses were rescued from the glue factory to live their days out on a local farm. Santa and the horse caretakers kept coming over to see our sketches and when we were finished, they asked to take some photos so they could print them on canvas. We of course obliged.

Watercolor in Stillman & Birn Beta.
On location at Old Westbury Garden. It was one of the hot days of summer. The scenes I wanted to sketch were of the gardens, but they were also in full sun and too hot for me. I sat under a tree and did this car. Not my usual subject matter but I had fun with it. The owner drove off just as I was finished!

Watercolor on 140 lb Saunders Waterford CP on locationin Northport, NY

This is the last piece I was able to produce this year. Early Spring at an orchard days before the trees were slated to be pruned back to force fruits. Peach blossoms are really more white with very pale peach and yellow centers.

Painted on location in the Spring in Setauket,NY. I wanted to paint the lilacs in front of the barn but I was there a week after they finished blooming. I paint with a friend who usually does two paintings by the time I finish one, although hers are half the size. I decided I was going to work fast and loose to finish before her.

Watercolor en plein air. This was done in the early Spring, with cool breezes coming off the Long Island Sound. This is right up the road from where Jackson Pollack lived. His home/studio has been preserved and is now a museum.

I am sorry for not commenting as much as usual but I have only had a handful of days off from work since the beginning of the year. I have a few days off this week before my work begins again so I thought I would post what little I have painted this year.

WC on Saunders Waterford 140lb CP en plein air in Nissequogue, NY.

I'm sure you're all bored seeing the same location, but my friend and I went there thinking we could sit in the car if it was too cold or windy. There are not alot of places to sketch or paint where you can park, let alone sit in a car. Anyhow, the weather was an amazing 61 degrees and unheard of at this time of year! Since I've only been painting about a year, I never realized until recenty, how the marsh grasses change color just like the rest of the foliage. I also never painted naked winter trees, so this was a bit different. The sun was strong, so the colors appeared bleached out, and that is how I painted them.

WS and Micron in Stillman & Birn Beta sketchbook on location in Port Jefferson, NY.

I had to do some work in Connecticut just before Christmas, so I decided to take the ferry across the Long Island Sound. I was in a lineup of vehicles waiting to get on and had 20 minutes to do this before driving on. Not my usual subject matter but I am trying to branch out in my sketching this year... I am also trying to diet, so we will see how long they both last ;^)

WC on quarter sheet Saunders Waterford 140lb CP.
Painted on location in Nissequogue, NY. in two hours. A spectacular sunny and warm day with the first signs of Autumn color. I sat on the beach to paint and it was low tide when I started. The water was about two feet away from me when I was done painting.

Wc and ink in Moleskine on location in Southampton , NY.
This inlet was formed by a hurricane in 1934. It allows boats easy access from the Atlantic Ocean to the Peconic Bay instead of going all around the island. The name is derived from the Shinnecock Indians that live in this area. We are having the most glorious Autumn weather so I am out sketching and painting as much as possible. The sun is low earlier in the day now. Painting two white boats in strong , low sunlight is a real challenge. I kept the color light intensionally.

I sat outside in a downpour under an awning painting, and using a photo I had taken the previous week to help me capture a sunnier day. Done in under two hours.
