Church Block 2009 Cab Sav-Shiraz-Merlot

Church Block was the first wine the late Greg Trott produced under the Wirra Wirra label back in 1972. He took the name from one of the original vineyards, which runs next to the small Bethany Church (est. 1854) across the road from Wirra Wirra's centruay old ironstone cellars. Over four decades, the Church Block label has become an Australian favourite, consistently offering a smooth, soft red wine that balances the complexity sought by aficionados, with the approachability desired by those seeking pure drinking pleasure.

The 2009 selection of Cabernet Sauvignon (51%), Shiraz (29%) and Merlot (20%) is another masterful blend. Matured in 70% French oak and 30% American oak barriques for 18 months, it is rich in fruit to enjoy its youth, but with the structure to develop for a decade under careful cellaring.

Grange is recognised as Australia's and indeed one of the world's finest red wines. This great wine, developed by Max Schubert commencing with the 1951 vintage, is made from the low yielding shiraz vines grown at selected vineyards in South Australia and completes fermentation in new American Oak hog's heads prior to bottling.

During an extensive tour of Europe in 1950, Max Shubert studied wine making practices that have now become an integral part of Penfolds winemaking technique.

He also observed the practice of maturing wine in new oak barrels, a method previously untried in Australia. The development of Grange represented the beginning of a new era in Australia's red weine making tradition. This knowledge, combined with Max Shubert's foresight, skill and dedication, has resulted in Grange, the definitive Australia dry red wine, acknowledged to be among the world's classic wine styles.

The 2004 vintage of Penfolds Grange was sourced form outstanding vineyards across South Australia, The fruit was fermented in the cellars at Nuriootpa and Magill, completing fermentation and 16 months maturation in new American Oak Hogs heads. Penfolds Grange will develop further complexity and integration of flavour for 20 years or more under current cellaring conditions. For optimum enjoyment this wine should be carefully double-decanted prior to being served.
